Introduction
I first saw the second and third episodes of Blue Gender on Cartoon Networks Adult Swim. It was very intriguing but came on way too late for me to keep up. I found it for $30 at "http://www.dreamsinstore.com". At less than $1.50 an episode and as long as it did not bomb, the series had to be worth it.
A Few Surprises Blue Gender surpassed my expectations as I found the series to be entertaining and enlightening. There is plenty of action throughout the series as well as drama and plot twists.
Also, should note that the series on DVD is uncut leaving in some complex themes of sexuality and nudity that you would not find on Cartoon Network. That was a surprise as well. Blue Gender is definitely not for children.
Story Line
Years in the future (2031) an alien species has taken over Earth forcing some of the elite to flee to outer space. On a giant space station, called Second Earth these humans mount a counter attack against these seemly simply but durable aliens.
The aliens are called Blue. They appear to have only simple purposes like eat, live, and multiply. Scientist on Second Earth discover a group of people on Earth who may be their only hope for retaking the Earth. These people are known as Sleepers because they are from the past that fell sick by this one incurable disease. So, they agreed to enter suspended animation to wait out a cure.
Teams of tough, highly trained soldiers are sent out to find these Sleepers. Enter Sleeper Yuji Kaido, a kid from the peaceful past, he wakes up prematurely during the mission to rescue him from Earth. With the team of soldiers sent to rescue him taking heavy casualties. Yuji has no choice but to learn to fight these animals to survive.
The Action
A great feature of Blue Gender is the action is not limited to robots fighting. While there is much action of the robots fighting these giant bug-like creatures, there is just as much action outside of the robots.
Series Themes
The themes found in the 26 episodes of Blue Gender are profound and really meant to emphasize how great life is now. Therefore, people should not take life for granted. These themes include love versus sex, the importance of Human life, the environment, and life goes on.
What Type of Anime is Blue Gender Blue Gender is a futuristic action-drama. There are robots, outer space, and alien creatures, then throw in a love story. It is similar to Neon Genesis Evangelion except without the comedy and more adult characters.
