Nothing captures pure, unadulterated joy quite like good ol' Rock n' Roll. Few movies have captured the liberating bliss of rock music quite like School of Rock. Writer Mike White (Orange County) and director Richard Linklater craft a charming story that is fun for children, adults, and anyone else who likes to rock.
Jack Black (Shallow Hal, Hi Fidelity) is Dewey Finn, an unmotivated, unemployed, rock star wannabe. Dewey is more concerned with his floundering hair metal band than he is with paying his rent to friend and roommate Ned (Mike White). Dewey gives in to the pressure and sneaks his way into a job; one that his isn't quite qualified for.
Dewey signs on to substitute teach fifth graders at a ritzy private school. The class seems destined to learn only about sleeping and recess until Dewey finds out the students can play instruments. Seeing an opportunity to fulfill his rock star dream, Dewey begins schooling the children in the ways of rock. Black's boyish, schoolboy excitement works exceptionally well with the fantastic cast of youngsters. The passion Black has for rock music really comes through when he frantically doles out different parts of the Doors' "Touch Me" to the class, and soon they are playing the classic song.
Joan Cusack (Runaway Bride, Nine Months) is spot-on as the tightly-wound school principal. The children deserve heaps of credit for making this movie work so well. Without their candid performances, Black's spastic guitar-god antics would be wasted.
As the movie comes to its rocking, onstage conclusion, it is impossible not to smile with joy at the group of straight-laced kids letting loose like Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, and Angus Young. White's writing and Black's off-the-wall humor do a marvelous job of capturing the spirit of Rock n' Roll.
