This, the second of two LIVE DVDs by No Doubt catches the band on a 2002 tour, performing at the Long Beach California Arena. They are on a huge stage set up backed with a giant video screen. The band is Gwen Stefani on vocals, Tony Canal on bass, Adrian Young on Drums and Tom Demont on drums. The band also has a keyboard player on this tour and an occasional trumpet. The show is about an hour and a half.
Set List
The songs played at this show were: Hella Good, Sunday Morning, Ex-Girlfriend, Underneath it All, Platinum Blonde Life, Bathwater, Don't Let Me Down, Magic's in the Makeup, Running, In my Head, New, SImple Kind of Life, Just a Girl and Hey Baby. There is also an encore with Rock Steady, Spiderwebs and Don't Speak
Performance
First, I'll come out and say that although I enjoy this concert, I feel that their performance on Live at the Tragic Kingdom is a better show. The additional horns and musicians on that show captured in '99 had a better overall sound to it. So if you have to choose one or the other, I'd recommend the other. However, if you are a fan of No Doubt, this is a good concert, and does a good job of showcasing the band's ROCK STEADY Tour. Although the focus of No DOubt have always been on Stefani's outrageous outfits and vocal style, the bands guitar player and bassist are quite good. Dumont certainly shows up on this set, as he played a LIME green Gibson Explorer! The horn does show up on a few songs here, but not as much. I especially enjoyed the jazz style trombone on the opening to Bathwater. Gwen doesn't seem to be having quite as much fun at this show.
In any event, a few of my favorite songs were New from the GO soundtrack, Just a Girl and Spiderwebs performed in the encore.
Audio Quality
The audio on this concert was superb, it not only includes Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital Surround, but also DTS 5.1 Surround. I listened to the disc in DTS. The bands crazy energy and vibrant ska / pop comes to life in this concert. Put your home theater to concert volume and let Gwen and her friends rock your living room!
Video Quality
The show is very colorful! This is a 4:3 aspect ratio set, and it is DVD quality. You can see the sweat drip down Gwen's makeup caked face. I was glad that the cameras focused not only on Gwen but on the rest of the band.
Extras This has the usual back stage footage, band interviews and a bit of background on members of No Doubt. I'll be honest, I find this stuff rather boring, noone talks about the things I'd really like to know, but some of it is entertaining.
Rating I wouldn't show this concert in front of the kids, Gwen uses the "F" word on occasion between songs, and some of her on stage mannerisms and outfits are pretty suggestive.
Summary This is a good concert by No Doubt. I felt the sound and video quality was quite good, and although this isn't my favorite NO DOUBT concert, I rate it four stars.
