Re: Sirk (Reply to this comment)

I think that was where I first heard about Sirk, when I viewed "Far From Heaven". I was intrigued to see what the Sirk films were like after commentary by Todd Haynes.
Thank you so much for the compliment.

Thanks Virginia. It is sad, but to me it wasn't like it was forced - the flow was good and believable for how the character saw herself.

I think the black mothers are really what made the film. Juanita Moore's performance had a lot to do with me liking the newer version at all. Whoever changed some of that script really did a disservice.
You're right about the setting too. I think this film was much more revolutionary at the earlier time and therefore made a stronger statement.

Sirk (Reply to this comment)
by WilliamJones
Sirk directed "women's pictures" and, at the time, wasn't given enough credit. Now his work has been reevaluated and critics see these movies were really quite good. With that said, "Imitation" isn't my favorite Sirk. That would be All That Heaven Allows, which you need to see if you haven't already done so.
This was a good review. I appreciate observations such as the following:
One of the great scenes is when the two women have a "girl chat" in the mansion once they've hit it big and Bea retires to her bedroom upstairs while Delilah walks down the stairs. It's a powerful, yet subtle statement.

I Didn't see the second version (Reply to this comment)
by Granniemose
but I still vividly remember seeing the first one with Claudette Colbert. I remember that I couldn't help crying - heck, I sobbed out loud and totally embarassed my older sister when the girl's mother died and she ran after the funeral
vehicle, not caring about what race she was. This is another one of your fine reviews, Patti.

Colbert (Reply to this comment)

was a better actress than Turner, and the dynamics of the story fit 1934 better than 1959, but the Sirk palette is not a negligible contribution. Very strong performances by the black mothers in both versions.
