few things...

1. Loved Gattaca...Ethan Hawke, until recently with the whole cheating on Uma thing (WHAT!?), is better than anyone gives him credit for.

2. Uma is sh*t in Tarantino's movies, all strut and silly posing, nothing more...but then he's a thieving hack so he needn't get her best work anyway.

3. Ben Affleck, an actor I used to think was pretty darn good (after seeing Shakespeare In Love and Chasing Amy) seems to be dead set on ruining his career.

4. Great revew, I mostly agree...can u tell?

I *always* go into movies expecting a masterpiece. That's why I don't give many 5-star reviews. I do, however, give lots of 4-star reviews, which suggests that sometimes when I don't get a masterpiece, I'm willing to settle for, you know, a movie that isn't total trash.

Paycheck (and your favorite, Mona Lisa Smile) were, unfortunately, mostly trash.

So anyway, why would we want to do a "He said/She Said" column since so clearly I'm right and you're wrong?

*grin*

Brian,

Are you saying that if Ben Affleck made 15 million for Paycheck and John Woo made 5 million for Paycheck and I'm gonna make 50 cents for my review of Paycheck something might be wrong? It's always been my theory that if studios sent me scripts or rough cuts of awful movies before perpetrating them on the public and let me write 50 page memos on how to improve them, the world would be a better place.

That's actually probably not true at all. But it makes me happy to think it... Plus, they'd have to pay me more than 50 cents.

I do so appreciate the MHs though!

John Woo has been talking about getting back together with Chow Yun-Fat since Broken Arrow. They were going to do King's Ransom together. They were going to do something about Chinese railroad workers. They were going to go back and make another Hong Kong action movie. Instead, Chow Yun-Fat makes Bulletproof Monk and Woo makes this. It doesn't really speak well for either of 'em...

And Ben Affleck just doesn't have a sense of what he wants to be as an actor and his projects suggest that. Basically, in Kevin Smith movies, he gets to play to his strength (though Jersey Girl looks like more weepy Ben) which is charming, smarmy frat boy types. He does that well. He has good comic timing and he isn't bad as a comic romantic lead. He's fine when he plays egotists (see Shakespeare in Love), but otherwise? He's not an action hero. He keeps proving that. He's not a dramatic leading man in general. I don't think he's bad. But he has very obvious limits. This as opposed to Matt Damon, who (Stuck on You excepted) has made mostly strong choices. Damon is also clearly the stronger actor...

Anyway, thanks for droppin' by with the multi-part comments...

Were you expecting a masterpiece?!

But most importantly, are we going to continue to take the opposite stance on movies? :)

I'm beginning to think we should just start doing a he said/she said column.

Let me know ;). Kristina

I've noticed that I'm giving you MH's about half the time. I think that's because, about half the time, you put more thought into writing your review than the writers, directors, and stars put into making the movie. Given the relative salary scales, it's hard to see how you're investing your time well - but at least, here on Epinions, we're glad.

cheers,

Er... Oh yeah. Affleck. (Reply to this comment)

Personally I think Affleck works best when he is a supporting character and that might be how it would be best for a director to deal with him. I found him fairly tolerable in Armageddon but he was basically playing part of an ensemble in that one. I really can't put a finger on many (any?) that he has done besides that where he played the lead and it worked for me.

Hmmmmmmmmm... Checking over his resume over on the IMdB... Pretty much the best he has had from me (in a starring role) as been a "Well, he wasn't tooo bad." sort of feeling.

:)

He didn't say Woo sucks, he said that Woo hasn't done much since he came to the USA. Perhaps Dan might have included more about Woo's work (like Better Tomorrow) and it would have been more helpful for ya.

I thought the review was pretty comprehensive personally...

"As a man who has starred in Phantoms, Affleck isn't likely to do "career worst" work any time in the near future, but he's not far off here. "

I laughed at this one:P

Sigh. Honestly I can't argue about Woo. I liked MI-2 personally but found it to be essentially a brainless action flick (which aren't really around too much lately) than necessarily something you can really get something from. Face/Off is definitely the best thing he has done since hitting the states (you didn't mention Blackjack btw:D ) with Hard Target being probably his campiest (a film with a kid's-size shotgun shooting exploding rounds is more than a bit over-some-top-or-another).

Hopefully Woo can get some better films going. Maybe if he and Chow Yun-Fat get together again one of these days they might balance each other out and get something solid made. Assuming that they didn't have a huge falling out and aren't ever talking to each other again (I am not up on the gossip about either).

There are 2300 words in this review. The vast vast majority are on the subject of Paycheck and all the rest are related to my overall opinion on the film. Sorry that's not enough for ya.

Indeed... Ben crying is a dangerous thing. Because of the whole mouth breathing thing, he looks especially pathetic when he tries to blubber. On the other hand, I think he's quite effective when he *nearly* cries, like in his big scene in Good Will Hunting.

And Paul Giamatti is always good, without fail.

Happy Holidays...

I found too much of Woo's other work here. I know Woo sucks, I just wanted more details about the movie, itself. Not organized well, either.

Great but Heartbreaking Review Man... (Reply to this comment)

I lost my respect for John Woo after "Windtalkers". That was a horrible film. I knew "Paycheck" wouldn't be good. I liked his older movies more. "Face/Off" was excellent but it got old quick.

Ben Affleck, only when he's funny like in "Phantoms" and the Kevin Smith films (until "Jersey Girl" will come out). I hate it when he's in a movie when he's crying like a b*tch. I'm never forgiving him for "Pearl Harbor" and of course, the time he f*cked a hand named Jennifer Lopez.

At least you gave some hope for Paul Giamatti. He was great in "American Splendor". He might be good in anything now. Great review dude and Merry Xmas.
