Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Growing up in New York City has let Mary Elizabeth know the finer things of life, and immersed her in a lot of culture. Unfortunately being in this town has caused her to think very highly of herself, and she has grown accustomed to being the center of attention. This is not lost on her Mother, who has nicknamed her a "drama queen", and it comes out in nearly every interaction that this girl has with someone. She has even gone as far as giving herself a new name of "Lola" in order to seem even more in tune with the New York culture. To make a long story short, Lola has become convinced that the world revolves around her, and she cannot understand why anyone would care about anything else. This leads to her entire world being thrown into chaos when her mother lets her know that they will be moving to the suburbs.
Living in a smaller town, she comes to realize right away that she is no longer garnering the same attention that her kooky ways got back in New York. In fact, some of the people at her new school have taken to disliking her, and trying to up-stage nearly everything that she says or does. This includes a student by the name of Carla who had been running this high school before Lola came along, and is not about to give up her territory to this new girl from the big city who always has a story to tell. The problem with the stories that Lola is telling, is that nearly all of them are lies, and though we as the audience know that she is lying to everyone (including her friends), everyone is oblivious until the obvious twists in the story make themselves known.
Lindsay Lohan stars in the main role of Lola, in a role that seems all too similar to the one she played in Mean Girls. She does anything she can to first fit in, and then when she has the chance she wants to stand out from the group. Along the way she makes friends with authentic people, but this turns out to just be a stepping stone for her to gain more attention from her peers. To be blunt, this really put her character in a terrible light from the beginning of the film, and it didn't get any better as the movie progressed. Her goals of becoming a famous actress and getting to meet the lead singer of her favorite rock band become paramount to anything else she does in the story. She no longer cares about anything but furthering herself, and the story gets bogged down in selfishness.
I really had a hard time with this story, because the main characters were just in it for themselves. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen is all about high school students trying to one-up each other and the consequences of doing just that. However, the message regarding the consequences is that everyone should be like this, and to that give my strong disagreement. I mention how the film got bogged down by the drama between these characters, well it also failed to impress on an acting or writing level. The characters were never given any depth, redeeming qualities were sacrificed for a few laughs, and the story was just so lacking in concept that it was hard for me to believe that this story made it to theaters. I would say just stay away from this movie, and don't believe those that say it is worth the film it was shot with.
