THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is not an easy film to watch. For those few readers uninformed as to its plot, PASSION tells the story of the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus Christ. (In other words, if you are minimally familiar with the Bible, you know the ending of the film already.)
I liked this film about as much as one can like a film this violent. Be forewarned - it's a bloodbath, worse than a lot of action flicks. Jesus is scourged within an inch of his life, and it isn't pretty, folks.
This movie is also based in part on the private revelations of a woman named Anne Catherine Emmerich, and as such, I found myself taking the plot with generous doses of salt. Even though I'm Catholic, I don't buy every private revelation (I'm skeptical of Fatima, for example), so I found myself watching this movie as if it were partially based on a work of fiction.
As far as performances go, I found Jim Caviezel's Jesus convincing, but Maia Morgenstern's Mary was somewhat wooden in the sense that she was given very little to say in this film. I'd have appreciated it if she were to get more dialog - and it is well worth noting at this point that everone spoke in Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin. For those of us adept at languages, subtitles were largely unnecessary, but they do come in handy for those of us who do not "catch on" easily when someone is speaking in a foriegn tongue.
My recommendation is that if you still have a theater with PASSION showing in it, don't take anyone under about 13 or 14. It's rated R for a good reason; youngsters can't handle all that violence, and the sight of adults making fun of a fellow adult will merely encourage young bullies to continue to harass others (rather than teaching people not to be violent).
