Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I'm not the type to always be drawn to goofy movies, and I originally had no plans to see Starsky and Hutch. However, I finally broke down and saw it last night and I seriously enjoyed it way too much.
I don't understand man, I don't understand. You can lose keys, ya know, you can lose your wallet. How... how do you lose a plane? ~Reese Feldman
"Heh... I just love 70s camera angles." This is what my boyfriend commented when David Starsky (Ben Stiller) and Ken Hutchinson (Owen Wilson) are both separately introduced. Both are shown in action and we immediately get a feel for their personality; Starsky is a true-blue cop, he loves fighting crime. Hutchinson (aka Hutch) on the other hand, loves participating in crime on the side. The two are paired up and told by Captain Doby (Fred Williamson), "You know something? You two deserve each other. Make nice. You two are partners."
Starsky and Hutch are assigned to find out what they can about a man found floating up in the bay. Their "detective work" leads them to find out about an upcoming coke deal that they are told, will be fit for the Guinness book.
Starsky and Hutch visit a cheerleading practice to see what the girls may know, and there they meet the beautiful Holly (Amy Smart) and Staci (Carmen Electra). Starsky and Hutch are given a jacket with a dragon design on it; a piece of evidence leading them to the jacket's designer, Big Earl (Will Ferrell). Big Earl gives them a bag of coke after a lot of hilarious bribery, but Captain Doby points out that the coke is not real, merely sweetener.
The sweetener, Big Earl, and Hutch's friend Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg), and many other things finally lead them to the perp, Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn), though the audience is savvy the whole time. As can be expected, however, there are quite a few mishaps along the way...
A little word of advice: next time you're watching a place, don't claim that you own it just because you're watching it, OK? I house sit for my sister all the time; it's not like I claim that I own her house, ya know what I mean? ~Starsky
This movie is, as was expected, hilarious. The movie is full of mishaps, subtle jokes, not so subtle jokes, and token characters, all of which add up to a solidly funny film. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson make a great duo, playing off each other's personalities. Though I am usually annoyed with Snoop Dogg, he was perfectly cast in his role as Huggy Bear; he makes a great illegal-but-okay-anyway guy, and his chill attitude fit the character fantastically. Vince Vaughn never fails to make me laugh, and he's no different as Reese Feldman. His humor is very dry; he makes you laugh while holding a completely serious face, often saying things that he seems to not even want to be funny. Amy Smart and Carmen Electra perfected the ditzy-but-fun cheerleader types in this movie. I don't know much about Carmen Electra, but Amy Smart certainly seemed much different than she did as Kayleigh Miller in Butterfly Effect. Will Ferrell generated huge laughs from my boyfriend and I as Big Earl, the dragon-loving guy no one could be too sure about.
As I mentioned before, the camera angles were sometimes reminiscent of old 70s Television shows, as were the costumes, cars, and lingo the characters used. It was, however, obvious that this was a remake, though in my opinion, that was part of the appeal in Starsky and Hutch. I loved the fact that the movie was extremely hilarious while still maintaining a follow-able story line. There were some parts that were fairly unbelievable, which annoys many people, but again, I think that's something that adds to the charm of the ever-popular "funny film." Some people may dislike this movie because some of the humor was sort of "out there."
There was drugs, sexual references and cussing in Starsky and Hutch. I would say the movie is inappropriate for children under 10; it is rated PG-13. It was directed by Todd Phillips.
Hutch : Which one do you want?
Starsky : I've always had a thing for blondes.
Hutch : Good, cause I'll take anything.
Alright guys, I'm not gonna lie to you. This is gonna get kinda weird... Two dragons. ~Big Earl
