Kung Fu Records have once again come through with an amazing DVD release. This time it is the Vans Warped Tour '03 DVD, and I think the back of the DVD says it best: "It was the Summer of 2003, and like the eight Summers before, every single person in the U.S. and Canada even remotely interested in punk rock, skating or BMX was there. There were no lights, no rock star staging, and a conspicuous lack of decent toilets, but over 60 bands played every day for 48 shows and everyone from the biggest star on the main stage to the luckiest band on a side stage had a story to tell of why they did it. These are the songs and stories of 24 of those bands giving a unique insight into the longest running, most successful, yet least pretentious concert tour in North America."
And that is what this DVD is. They have 24 live performances from bands like Dropkick Murphys, Thrice, Sum41, Rancid, Suicide Machines, Face To Face, Simple Plan, Mad Caddies, Andrew W.K., Tsunami Bomb, The Ataris, Pennywise, and many, many more. In between the performances they have mini segments of interviews, some are from the bands, some are from the skaters, some from the, and even Kevin Lyman answers a few questions from the fans of the Warped Tour. The performances are all filmed extremely well. They are perfectly clear, the sound is clean, and they give you multiple angles switching from view to view continuously.Kung Fu Records have definitely learnt how to capture a live performance perfectly. Of course there is a wide range of sounds in these 24 songs, so some of them you will not like while others you will love; this happens with almost any compilation and this DVD isn't an exception. There isn't really a standout segment in the DVD, each one is good in its own way. All the bands are putting on the best show they can and the crowd is always appreciative. The addition of the interviews in between gives you a little bit a breathing room from track to track too. But, if you for some reason don't want to watch them, Kung Fu gives you the opportunity to play only the performances if you want, and then afterwards you can play only the interviews if you feel like it. In addition to the actually movie, they also have over one hour of extended interviews from twelve of the people interviewed, this lets you understand the way of the Warped Tour even more then before; and a great photo gallery from famed photographer Lisa Johnson.
Vans Warped Tour '03 is a good DVD to get you excited for the upcoming tenth anniversary tour. Anyone who likes watching live DVDs, and especially if you are a fan of the bands on here, then you should definitely pick it up.
