I have liked Pierce Brosnan since I saw him in the television show Remington Steele. I have seen most of his movies. I also like Julianne Moore. I wanted to see Laws of Attraction, the movie they made together, when I first saw the previews for the movie. I didnt get the chance to see it in the theater, but I rented it later.
Audrey Woods was a successful divorce lawyer in New York City. She never lost a case until she faced Daniel Rafferty in court. He seemed to be the exact opposite of Audrey, but he was more organized than he looked. There was an attraction between them that Daniel wanted to act on. Audrey tried to keep her distance, but they did get involved. Audrey and Daniel continued to be opposing counsel on several cases.
Thorne Jamison was the lead singer of a popular rock band. He was married to Serena, a fashion designer. They had a stormy marriage that was breaking up. Audrey and Daniel ended up on opposite sides of the case. Thorne and Serena both wanted a castle they owned in Ireland. Judge Abramovitz sent Audrey and Daniel to Ireland to depose the staff to try to figure out who would get the castle. They ended up spending a lot of time together and went to a festival. The next morning they woke up married. They originally planned to immedately file for divorce once they returned to New York but they decided to stay married for the time being.
Laws of Attraction was a fun light-hearted movie. It was a romantic comedy, which isnt the most original type of movie. Laws of Attraction did follow a fairly standard formula. Audrey and Daniel met early in the movie. There was an attraction between them, though Audrey continued to try to fight it. Later in the movie, a conflict developed before the ultimate resolution. The movie was predictable, but this is normal for this type of movie. There were some things that happened that were unique to this movie like how they were rival divorce lawyers that ended up married. Even though the movie was predictable, I thought it was very entertaining. It is a good romantic comedy that is worth seeing if you like this type of movie. People that enjoy the actors may also like the movie.
Laws of Attraction dealt with the beginning of one relationship and the ending of others. Audrey was a very successful divorce lawyer that had no time for personal relationships. She had no faith in marriage anymore, partly because of the cases she worked on. Her mother, Sara, had been married and divorced more than once. Sara wanted her daughter to have a happy relationship. Daniel still believed in marriage even though he was also a successful divorce lawyer. He was interested in Audrey right from the start. There was sexual tension between them throughout the movie. Audrey and Daniel did have sex a few times, but there werent really any sex scenes in the movie. They were shown kissing and even in bed together once. In one scene articles of clothing were shown landing on the floor. Julianne Moore was shown in her bra once. Pierce Brosnan was shirtless once or twice. He was also shown without his pants once. There was no nudity in the movie.
Audrey worked hard to build a successful career. She was devoted to her work and didnt take time to date. She was a good lawyer, though she did get nervous before trials. She tended to eat sweets when she was nervous. She got flustered in some situations. Audrey took pride in her appearance and was upset by Daniels dishevel appearance. Audrey was extremely organized, going so far as to take several different colored markers into court with her. I could see myself doing something like that. Every year I have to take some classes for work and I use several different highlighters. Ive even color coded certain things, so it was completly believable to me that Audrey would do that. I really liked Julianne Moore as Audrey. Moore usually plays more serious parts, like she did in The Forgotten, but she can do comedy as well. She did look a bit flustered and maybe even uncomfortable a few times. I wasnt sure if that was just her take on Audrey for those scenes or if Moore herself was flustered.
Daniel acted very differently than Audrey did. He wasnt as organized and most of the times he showed up in court looking rumpled. He did show up looking neat a few times. He was a good lawyer even though he used some unconventional methods. He was more laid back and relaxed than Audrey. He was determined to convince Audrey that they could have a relationship. I really liked Pierce Brosnan in this part. Daniel was very different from most of the other parts I have seen him play, especially James Bond. Women did seem to be interested in Daniel even though he didnt look as suave as Bond. The character he played in After the Sunset, Max, was laid back like Daniel, but he looked much scruffier.
Sara turned up in a few scenes throughout the movie. She was a fun character and I really enjoyed her scenes. She and Daniel got along. Frances Fisher did a good job with the part. Fisher really isnt that much older than Moore, but they had a very believable mother daughter relationship dynamic. The fact that Sara didnt look much older than her daughter was explained with the characters plastic surgery. She was a bit shallow, but she was a kind woman that did love her daughter. Thorne and Serena were very unique characters. They were a bit over the top, but it worked for the characters. Michael Sheen and Parker Posey were fabulous in the parts. Nora Dunn showed up briefly in a few scenes as Judge Abramovitz. She seemed to the judge most often hearing the cases that Audrey and Daniel were involved in. She didnt have a lot to do, but she was good in the part.
Pierce Brosnan - Daniel Rafferty
Nora Dunn - Judge Abramovitz
Frances Fisher - Sara
Julianne Moore - Audrey Woods
Parker Posey - Serena
Michael Sheen - Thorne Jamison
The DVD for Laws of Attraction contains the fullscreen and widescreen versions of the movie. There were some deleted scenes, including an alternate ending. There wasnt anything special in any of the deleted scenes. Two theatrical trailers were also included. The movie was 90 minutes long and rated PG-13. There really wasnt anything offensive in the movie, but children probably wouldnt be interested in it.
Laws of Attraction wasnt the most original movie, but I thought it was entertaining. It is a good romantic comedy so people that like those movies should watch it. People that like Pierce Brosnan or Julianne Moore may also like the movie.
