Suppose you wanted to make a documentary designed to smear a company. How would you go about it? First, you'd round up a bunch of former (meaning laid off or just plain fired) employees and interview them about the company that they used to work for. Next, you'd interview high ranking people who work for rival companies and get them to comment on their biggest competitor. Finally, you'd compile bits and pieces of video and press from employees of that company and put them together in the most embarrassing fashion possible. You'd, of course, have to do this without any regard to the original context. The end result would be completely one sided because the majority of the information sources used to compile the documentary would be considered unreliable, at best.
Outfoxed is the equivalent of making a documentary about the Yankees by interviewing a bunch of Red Sox fans. It is another 'documentary' that jumps on the Michael Moore bandwagon to smear all Republicans, especially President Bush. All of this stuff came out before the election in an attempt to keep Bush from getting re-elected. Despite the liberal's best efforts, it did not work.
Fox News is the new kid on the block when it comes to cable news networks, but it also is the highest rated. It earns better ratings that CNN and MSNBC combined (according to the Wikipedia online encyclopedia). Their "Fair and Balanced" slogan constantly repeats throughout the day. When you are on top, all the little people are going to find ways to knock you down. Does anyone remember when the liberals tried to do an all leftist radio show called Air America? Neither do I, because nobody listened to it and they went under. Go figure.
This schlockumentary film runs just under eighty minutes long and opens with a brief history on Australian Rupert Murdoch and describes his media empire. The guy is a brilliant and successful businessman who has had a string of financially successful business ventures. Therefore, he must be evil, right?
The movie then goes on to interview a bunch of former employees who describe the behind the scenes processes used in the studio and how certain conservative issues were forced on them to mention in the news. There is no way in hell I could seriously consider the opinion of a bunch of disgruntled former employees. The issue about them being told to push the topic of the day is simply journalism and trying to keep things interesting. Do you really think the other news networks don't search for different topics to use as themes for certain time periods?
A big part of Outfoxed focused on Bill O'Reilly, the host of the Fox News flagship political commentary 'No Spin Zone' show called The O'Reilly Factor. O'Reilly is the new Jerry Springer. He's arrogant and rude and loves to get into arguments with guests who have opposing views. Imagine trying to discuss politics with the drill sergeant character from Full Metal Jacket. Many critics of Fox News consider O'Reilly to be an anchor on par with the likes of ABC's Peter Jennings or the recently retired fake document pusher Dan Rather. That comparison is completely wrong. O'Reilly is a political commentator who picks sensitive topics and stirs up all kinds of debate with his guests. Before joining Fox News, he was an anchor with the tabloid show Inside Edition. His job is to stir up trouble and his ratings are through the roof.
In the part about O'Reilly, Outfoxed shows him tell this kid to shut up several times. Just before, they show a clip of O'Reilly denying that he ever told anyone to shut up. Yeah, so Bill O'Reilly is an a-hole. That's not news. At least he didn't try so hard to smear the President that he ran fake documents on the news like Dan Rather did. Bill O'Reilly's job is to stir up a political hornet's next for every show he does, and he's really good at it. You won't see Diane Sawyer pull the same kind of antics on Good Morning America, but that's because she does a completely different type of show.
In another segment, Outfoxed comments on the Fox News commentary team of Hannity and Colmes. Hannity is the handsome conservative guy and Colmes is the 'squirrelly looking' liberal. Yes, Outfoxed goes so far as to insult the physical appearance of the liberal commentator because he isn't quite as good looking as the conservative guy. How retarded is that?
In the end, Outfoxed does for the Fox News Channel what Fahrenheit 9/11 did for President Bush - nothing. It takes a few interesting bits of information and skews them with the kind of myopia that Outfoxed is accusing the Fox News channel of using in the first place. Fox is still number one and Bush got re-elected. Hey liberals, get over it. You'll have another chance in 2008.
