Pros: the now-infamous oral sex scene was non-gratuitous
Cons: entirely too many cons to list in 15 words
The Bottom Line: I am relieved that I rented this movie for a mere 50 cents. Any more than that and I'd be clamoring for my money back, as well as my soul.
Its official. After four days of thinking about it, Ive come to the decision that I have finally seen The. Worst. Movie. Ever. Created. After watching it over the weekend, I thought that maybe, just maybe, The Brown Bunny might deserve that title, but its such a dishonor, I didnt want to hand it out rashly, while the feeling of the past 93 minutes having been sucked from my life was still so fresh. But now, four days later, Im still quite convinced: this was the worst piece of self-indulgent crap Ive ever seen.
I can forgive a man with a vision, a man who trusts no one else to touch his dream. M. Night Shyamalan is such a man. He usually writes, directs, and produces his own films. His most recent film even had him starring as the worlds savior. I can forgive that arrogance when the end result is something that doesnt make me want to scratch out my eyes in the hopes that the images will not be forever burned into my dying soul. Vincent Gallo is such an arrogant man. Unfortunately, his self-indulgent movie, The Brown Bunny (which, Im convinced was born out of a conversation between Vincent Gallo and onetime girlfriend, Chloe Sevigny: Hey, would you be willing to do that exact same thing in my next movie?) was of the type that kills souls.
I should mention that Ive seen the edited version of the movie. The original movie, shown at Cannes film festival is the one that prompted Roger Ebert to pronounce it the worst movie ever to be entered at Cannes. He later changed his rating to a thumbs up, after the editing. Me? Even after the editing, Ill have to agree with Eberts initial statement that the film of his colonoscopy would make for better viewing.
Because there are people who get mad when an entire movie is given away in a review, Im forced to warn you that the following paragraph gives the entire movie away, albeit in a more entertaining fashion than watching the movie itself. I risk the dreaded bad ratings for your sake, that you might not suffer as I have suffered.
After a too-long opening showing motorcycle racers going around and around, sometimes with sound, sometimes in silence, we meet our protagonist, one of said racers (though not the winning one), Bud Clay. Bud is going to drive to California for his next race, and (I believe this was the intent) battle his love-lost demons along the way. On the back of the DVD cover, the plot was said to be something along the lines of him driving toward the love of his life and meeting three very different women on the journey. The back of the DVD cover instead should have read something like: driving, quick encounter, driving, driving, viewing road through bug-crusted windshield, muffled conversation, driving, driving, unrealistic rest stop make-out scene, driving, driving, viewing road through bug-crusted windshield, quick encounter, driving, driving, Daisy, now-infamous fellatio.
Yep, thats about it. There are those (Vincent Gallo among them, Im sure) who would argue that the incessant driving was a symbol of his solitude, his inner torment. To them, I have nothing but contempt, and a plea for the time that I lost to this self-indulgent drivel to be given back to me. I really have nothing against the blow job scene. Im not offended by it, I welcomed the change in pace it offered. But one penitent blow job after an hour and fifteen minutes of tortured driving doesnt make a movie.
