Seinfeld- Seasons 1 & 2

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Season 2 is great

Cons:Season 1 is generally pretty boring

The Bottom Line: 8.3/10

Seinfeld, while hugely popular, was actually a good show, which is rare of popular shows. Well alright, the show had its ups and downs, but in general, when Seinfeld is on, I sit and watch it. The first two seasons are pretty dull but they still work fine as a television program. It wasn't until Season 4 that the show began to get classic but the earlier seasons still have a degree of charm to them.

The show is said to be a show about nothing, which isn't true. It's a show about a New York comedian and all the little observations he makes in preparing bits for his comedy, which at least within these first few seasons is interspersed between the sitcom elements. Sitcoms are generally unfunny, to make a funny one, you have to have a certain level of detachment from the characters, because we're literally watching a bunch of live actors acting out a situation in front of the audience. If you like the characters, it has those soap opera moments, like Full House, which naturally was a terrible program. If the characters are morally ambiguous or detestable, the show is just a lot more interesting.

That's the case with Seinfeld. The show has a very nihilistic and even cruel backbone, but that's what makes it funny. Of the four main characters, they all seem to be out for themselves. They still act as humans, and show signs of fear, remorse and caring, but beneath that there is such a careless level of apathy towards every situation that makes it funny, especially since the plotlines revolve around extremely petty and trivial things nearly all of the time. There is actually only one sentimental moment on the entire series run, and it's early on in this Season 1 and 2 boxset. It only lasts a minute, and it's the only time the series seems to drop the ball on its modus operandi.

Season 1 and 2 are the strangest set of episodes. The series starts with The Seinfeld Chronicles, which is actually just the pilot episode, which is weird. The music is different, the restaurant they go to is different, but the characters are essentially the same. Elaine is nowhere to be found, though George, Kramer and Jerry are essentially the same. Kramer is a bit more gruff in the earlier episodes, and George actually acts as a human being, where around season 4 he becomes a literal caricature of a human. Season 1 is just five episodes, and they are among the worst episodes of the series, but they're still watchable.

Season Two is pretty good, in fact it has some of the most memorable episodes, with the highlight episode being The Chinese Restaurant, which is one of the series' top ten episodes. The whole episode is pure social commentary and takes place in one restaurant lobby with an extremely inept host who can't seem to get anything right and doesn't seem to care. The statue is another great episode, the entire episode centers around a statue which a cleaning man stole, and when Kramer finally recovers it, it shatters in the last three seconds, rendering the entire episode pointless. I also really like The Pony Remark, because it's among the most trivial episodes. At a family dinner Jerry casually states that he hates ponies and someone's grandmother or something gets extraordinarily offended. She dies shortly after the rest of the episode is just a morbid speculation on how stupid the whole idea is.

The DVD extras here are great, with commentaries, little behind the scenes stuff and other. I would've liked to have heard the entire cast of four do the commentary, but it's split between Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David and the Michael Richards, Julia-Lewis Drefyfus and Jason Alexander. Overall this is a good series of seasons but there are better ones around the series' midpoint.
