Given2FlyMike's Full Review: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Ever wonder what would happen if a legion of giant RockEm SockEm Robots invaded the United States? Me neither, but it is downright entertaining, and so is Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Somehow, this summer action blockbuster got bumped to September. Regardless of release date, Sky Captain soars on the wings of high-octane action, imaginative cinematography, and plenty of star power.
Nosy reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) is covering a rash of missing scientists for a newspaper in 1930s New York when the sudden robot attack occurs. Perkins, ever the pesky journalist, is determined to find the origin of the huge androids. She enlists the help of her ex-flame, Sky Captain Joe Sullivan (Jude Law). Joe pilots a suped-up P-57 Mustang as part of some kind of for-hire military squadron that can save the day at a moments notice. After an attack on the squadrons base that ends with the enemy robots abducting Joes buddy Dex (Giovanni Ribisi), Joe and Polly set off to find the source of the robot invaders.
The ensuing chases lead the duo all over the globe: from the mountains of Nepal to a floating airbase headed by the fiery Captain Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie). Eventually, Joe and Polly find a remote tropical island that is home to all the sinister activity. It is up to the two to save the world from sure annihilation.
What makes Sky Captain different from most big budget blockbusters is the film gives the viewers their moneys worth. It has something for everyone: stars, looks, effects, and action. The big name stars, Paltrow, Law and Jolie, dont disappoint. In fact, Paltrow shines in her role as the golden-haired, bright-eyed reporter. Director Kerry Conrans cinematography is inventive and original. The opening third of the movie is a gloomy, hazy tribute to classic films of the 1920s and 30s like Metropolis. The movies look holds up even during heavy special effects shots and sequences. Most of the film was shot in front of green screens; special effects nuts will love the scope of the digital places Joe and Polly go. Sky Captain also features plenty of action scenes. After all, it is a misplaced summer blockbuster. The movies raucous finale rivals the fast paced action of the Indiana Jones series.
Sky Captain is a cut about the average action flick. It would set any box office records or win any awards, but it will entertain quite a few moviegoers. It has all the stars and action, with the right marketing, Sky Captain might have been 2004s hit of the summer.
