A grieving mother is torn with the loss of her 8-year old son, Sam (Christopher Kovaleski & Matthew Pleszweicz), who died in a plane disaster and those memories have caused her to seek professional help from a psychiatrist. Telly Paretta (Julianne Moore) struggles to cope with life, constantly haunted by the memories of her loss, she sought help from a psychiatrist, Dr. Jack Munce (Gary Sinise). Just as things started to become manageable in her life, she soon discovered little things have been disappearing from her life: a family photo have been replaced with just a photo of her and her husband, photos of her son disappeared from photo albums and clippings of her son tragic death were missing. When confronted by her husband and her psychiatrist, they informed her that she had created the life memories of her 8-year old son, that he never made it past birth.
Unwilling to accept what was said as being true; she stormed out to find the answers and is re-acquainted with Laurens father, Ash Correll (Dominic West), an alcoholic of 14 months. Lauren (Kathryn Faughnan) and Sam had been friends and often played together until both Sam and Lauren died, along with 9 other kids, in the plane disaster. Ash, unfortunately, neither remembers ever being a father nor ever having a daughter named Lauren, but remembers his road to becoming an alcoholic, just not the reason. With Ash being the only person she feels can help her with uncovering the truth; she forced him to remember his daughter. Together, they search for clues and to the reasons why memories are being erased from everyone, why are they being sought by the NSA and more importantly, why it appears that only she was not affected.
When it comes to being a thriller-movie, this was one of better to come out. Because you are thrown into the middle of the story, you will need to pay attention as she goes through lots of flashbacks this is necessary to help fill in the information that you dont have in the beginning and things begin to unravel and reveal themselves. While this movie has some elements of fright that you might get from seeing the Ring, you dont have to worry about seeing grotesque or mutilated bodies, but I warn you that there are moments when you will need to expect the unexpected. I was little disappointed with the ending of the plot and what that truth was, but stuff in between was superbly done. The casting was superb with Julianne Moore leading the cast, followed by Dominic West and Gary Sinise; Anthony Edwards played a good supporting role as the husband.
Overall, I would rank this movie up there with being one better (note the word better) movies to come along in the genre of being a thriller movie, however it would still be best if you waited for the rental.
