Pros:My Fave of the Fab 4
Cons:not much content, only "Live In Japan" videos in DTS
The Bottom Line: If you can afford the whole box set, with this as the "Bonus DVD", you'll probably be better off.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Originally part of the Dark Horse Years boxset in 2003, George Harrison - The Dark Horse Years 1976 - 1992 DVD probably should have remained a "bonus dvd" in a box set instead of a stand-alone DVD.
While George has always been my fave of the Fab Four, this DVD comes off as a thrown together package. When compared to a release like John Lennon - Lennon Legend, it is even more obvious this is not of the same calibre.
First, make sure you read the fine print before purchasing. While the back has a DTS surround logo, only the 4 songs from Live In Japan are in this format (cd for this concert is in SACD, so I suppose it was the only 5.1 remaster ready to go).
Track by track:
1. Dark Horse Feature
Interesting piece, but not near long enough for any George Harrison/Beatles fan
2. This Song
I refer to this song as the "smart-alec reply" to the whole plagiarism controversy he had with "My Sweet Lord".
3. Crackerbox Palace
Quirky tune, and definitely highlights George's dry humour
4. Faster
Good tune, not as familiar with his older releases, but another fun video
5. Got My Mind Set On You - Version I
6. Got My Mind Set On You - Version II
Yes, there were two versions of this video, both have their charm, but SO disappointed they weren't given better remastering treatment
7. When We Was Fab
Cute video, with friend/producer/beatle fanatic Jeff Lynne, Elton John and Ringo Starr. Special effects look extremely dated today, but it has its charms.
8. This Is Love
Screams Jeff Lynne production, and being a Jeff Lynne fanatic myself, that is a compliment. Cheesy yes, but melodic and highlights George's talents.
9. Taxman (from Live In Japan)
10. Cloud 9 (from Live In Japan)
11. Devil's Radio (from Live In Japan)
12. Cheer Down (from Live In Japan)
Thank goodness, 4 tracks that were shown some respect. When used properly, DTS surround can sound SO good. Much fuller sound than anything else in this package, and if it does anything, it probably makes the other tracks sound that much more lacking.
13. Shanghai Surprise
14. Someplace Else
15. Hottest Gong In Town
Not George Harrison's shining moment... sound is average at best, and the movie was a total stinker.
I know this DVD features original videos and clips, but in the end does not give "The Quiet Beatle" the respect he deserves. With Lennon-Legend DVD, they created videos using old clips, photos and home movies, remastered ALL the songs in Dolby and DTS, and in the end created a masterpiece. Total time was just over an hour, and left me very unfufilled. Missing were some of his best work... All Those Years Ago, My Sweet Lord, and anything from his last release Brainwashed. If they could have added "Any Road" or "Marwa Blues" to this DVD, I would have been MUCH happier.
My advice... grab Jeff Lynne, lock him in the studio with the master tapes, and don't let him out until we have the "Definitive" George Harrison DVD. The music for 2003's Concert For George DVD was produced by Jeff, and was probably his best work.
