"A comedy that puts the life back in funeral", these lines hit me hard and hinted that here could be a good comedy after all. So despite not seeing any trailers or reviews on the movie, I decided to give it a try!! Bad Choice :)!!
The Plot
A dysfunctional family is getting together to bury the old patriarch of the family. The family consists of a grandmother and four children who now have their own children. So we have a impish little elder sister babysitting everyone, we have a lawyer who specializes in misplaced wise cracks, a lesbo and a loser actor whose golden moment came when he was 8 years old.
The actor's daughter bags the role of delivering the Eulogy from her granny. The problem is she knows not what to speak and nobody else remembers anything worth speaking about the grandfather. So begins and ends the tale!!
The Movie
Given the shoestring plot, the movie had to depend on magical comic moments for it to be successful. But leave alone magical moments, comic moments are hard to find. Michael Clancy's concept of comedy seems to revolve around smoking pots, children obsessed with sex and lesbos. There too it would have been great if they would have provided the background laughs for us to know when to laugh.
There are very few genuine moments where the funny bone is tickled like when the Granny tries the jump shot of the car. But overall the movie is a dull and drab affair. The actors just seem to be present, with nobody really taking centerstage. It seems that the cast gave up on the story midway themselves.
As far as the actual Eulogy, it ends before it begins to provide a perfectly boring climax to a boring movie. I guess the movie had situations which could have been exploited like the chemistry between granny and family and how she sees each one of them. But rather granny was pushed out of the movie totally owing to suicidal tendencies.
Summary
All in all it is dull and drab affair. Better forgotten and buried. Rest in Peace with a 1 star rating.
