Pros: Plot, Characters, Dark Style.
Cons: Way too twisted for some.
"He doesn't want us to cut through our chains..he wants us to cut through our feet."
Saw is one of those films that made a huge mark in film history. It was coined as one of the most shocking, gory, nasty horror films out there. It has been hailed as "torture porn", but it is so much more than that. Sure, it may not be the best film you have ever seen, but it is a chilling/dark film. It has gratuitous gore, an wonderfully well-woven plot, chills, thrills, and everything else a great horror film should have. While it may not be your new favorite film, and it definitely won't be something you want to watch with your family, Saw is a great entry in the horror chapter.
The film begins with two men, Dr. Gordon and Adam, waking up in a dark, creepy bathroom; neither of them remembering how they got there. They were both abducted, and there is a dead body on the floor in between them. They find a cassette tape, giving Dr. Gordon instructions to kill Adam before the day is up. If he does not succeed, both he and the ones he love will be murdered. Finding clues all around them, with intriguing messages, they don't know who to trust. Can they ever make it out? Does Dr. Gordon complete his task? Watch this excellent film, and you will receive all of the answers.
There is also a large "detective story" aspect to this film. Following a path of the recent, torturous murders, detectives are on the search for the notorious "jigsaw killer". He kills those who are not worthy for the lives they have been given, and he puts them in brutal torturing devices. They have to get out in allotted amount of time, and they are given the opportunity to escape (that is, if they complete some terrible task). It is clear that this man is responsible for the abduction of Dr. Gordon and Adam.
The plot is wonderfully well-woven, with twists and turns around every corner. This film never ceases to amaze me with what it has to offer. Whether it be a major plot twist, a horribly gory trap, or the deceptive nature of the jigsaw killer, this film will always keep you on the edge of your seat. You actually begin to care about these characters, and they are both very well developed. It is a very involving film, making sure you pay close attention if you want to fully understand. All you can do is sit back, try to relax, and absorb everything this film throws at you.
Both the "bathroom" and the "detective" aspects of this film go hand in hand wonderfully. The music in this film is superb: ranging from metal to it's ominous theme song. The visuals are very, very creepy. The gore is over-the-top, and it will cause many to not enjoy the film. However, I was not that affected by it, in fact I thought it gave this film a signature style.
Overall, Saw is a dark, twisted, brutal horror film. It has an excellent storyline, gratuitous gore, interesting characters, and an amazing theme song. It will undoubtedly keep you interested and involved. While this will be way to violent and twisted for some, Saw is a great film. I strongly recommend it (to those who can handle it) and give it a solid 4-star rating. I was surprised about how much I loved this film.
