Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I rented this movie without reading the overview because it was recommended to me by someone. I thought the movie was just okay at best. My husband couldnt even make it through the movie but popped in for certain scenes. Although the movie was pretty predicable, the timing of events made the movie a little more interesting.
The all-too-familiar love storyline was there but it had a little twist to it in this movie. This is a drama and lacked the humor that most love stories have. The grandmother was the only humorous character and was a hoot at the beginning of the movie but mellowed out and became familiar by the end of the movie. Indeed this is a love story, but its much more than a man and a woman falling head over heels in love. Its more of a story about a woman finding herself and learning what love is all about.
The movie is about a woman who learns a lot about life in just a couple months. The story goes into detail about her relationships with about 5 individuals.
The main character, Helen McCarter (Kimberly Elise), is a beautiful woman both in looks and personality who has been married to her rich lawyer husband Charles (Steve Harris) for 18 years. In the beginning we see how she loves her husband very much but the feelings are not reciprocated. The story begins to pick up once we learn that their marriage is rocky.
With her marriage in shambles and no where else to turn Helen arrives at her grandmothers house to put her life back together. She gets a job for the first time, begins a new friendship with potential for more, and learns how to become the self-confident woman that she needs to be.
A traumatic event for her soon to be ex-husband brings complication and with the subtle help from friends and family members she eventually reaches closure in her life.
Near the end of the story her mother enters the picture and starts to give her daughter lectures about God and religion. The grandmother puts in her two cents in her non-religious way.
Her sister was a tangent in the movie. Her sister had turned to drugs which caused her sisters family great heartache. In her story she was the reason that her marriage was failing. I think the story was trying to balance out relationships to show that it isnt always the man that destroys a relationship.
There were two men and two women in this movie that played the honorable roll and two women and two men that played the selfish home wrecker roll. I think it worked out well in showing the moral of the story. I dont recall a movie that stressed principles as much as this movie did; the viewer is pretty much forced to see the moral of the story.
The story ends in a church with singing and praise. I was a little confused how this story ended up with a religious pull but at least the story had a unique plot and worked out well for wrapping up the storyline.
This was rated PG-13 because it has some drug use in and adult subject matter. I dont think this would be suitable nor enjoyable for a teen or younger to watch.
I've also heard it said that this is a Christian movie which I think is just crazy. Just because they use the word God loosely in the last 5 minutes of this movie doesn't make it a Christian show. It lacked quite a bit of moral judgment and breaks way too many commandments to be considered religious in my opinion. This is more like a crazy soap oprera.
I was able to successfully finish watching this movie though I felt that I could have made a better viewing choice. I was disappointed that there wasnt any comedy in the show. The storyline wasnt too shocking or out of the ordinary. I really wasnt entertained very much through the movie. The rise and fall of a relationship is pretty boring to me, Ive seen it a hundred times on movies and its always the same. I was surprised how long it took before I understood the mad black woman concept. Several times I thought I found it but wasnt the climax which was the most interesting part of the movie for me.
It was an okay movie if youre in the mood for something mushy. I think this would have been better if it had some comedy included or if some of the boring scenes were clipped out.
