Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
This movie is a continuation of the first movie but with a new adventure. The three aliens are living with Lilo and her older sister. The movie stands alone and is an unrealated adventure yet still has a lot to do with the first one.
Recap from Lilo and Stich 1:
As we learned in the previous movie, young Lilo was living with her teenage sister Nani because her parents had passed away. Lilo was having a hard time dealing with the loss and making friends so Lilo and her sister agreed they would get a dog. The dog pound had picked up Stitch thinking he was a dog but really he was an alien. Two other aliens came to earth to look for Stitch. The three aliens ended up staying on earth.
Synopsis for Lilo and Stich 2:
Lilos mother was a great hula dancer so when Lilo learned about the hula contest she was determined to win but scared that she didnt have it in her. She has a rival named Myrtle in her class which she fusses with. The young girls in the hula class are tasked with creating their own hula dance to perform. Lilo is at a loss for ideas. She takes a journey with hopes of gaining inspiration through discrete signs from her favorite singer, Elvis.
The hula contest is a distraction that allows the story to develop Stitch's glitch. Stitch is very concerned that he will switch back to the mischievous side. The two aliens try to help Stitch and try to cover it up. Lilo notices that Stitch is acting up but believes that he will behave on his own until he ruins everything and then gives up on him.
The aliens decide that creating a fusion chamber would be the only way to save him now. Since Jumba built Stich he was the perfect candidate to build a fusion chamber.
Stitch eventually malfunctions and goes missing. The group searches for Stitch but it may be too late.
Odds and Ends
This movie runs 68 minutes long and is rated PG for mild action. The younger kids will enjoy watching all the action and hearing the fun music. Older kids will laugh at all the comedy in this movie and appreciate the adventure. There are a few lessons to learn from the movie in regards to Ohana (Ohana means family). Im not sure if the kids get all of the jokes or not but I think adults are also a target audience for this entertainment. My 11-year-old begged to get the movie and loves it and rates it 5 stars.
The kids also enjoyed the bonus features: Bonus video, Games and Activities and Music.
Awesome music in this DVD. Really upbeat and adds value to the movie. Three classic Elvis Presley songs are included in addition to some Hawaiian style music.
One Grumble
This has the FastPlay advertised on the cover which means the movie will start playing without needing to use the remote which is helpful for kids to start on their own BUT I think they forgot to mentioned they filled the beginning with a bunch of advertisements that no one will want to sit through every time!
Comparing 1 to 2
Its always risky to get a sequel. The first movie is always fantastic; obviously there wouldnt be a sequel if it wasnt. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in the first movie and learning about Ohana.
In the second movie we see the same characters such as Lilo, sister (who is more mature now) and her boyfriend (hardly present), Stitch and the other two aliens, rival classmate Myrtle and the hula dance instructor. Without seeing the first movie the viewer wouldnt understand why the family has aliens living with them or how important Stitch and Lilo are to each other. The viewer also might not understand why Lilo is living with her sister and the importance of that. I would certainly recommend seeing the original Stitch first otherwise this will be just another meaningless adventure.
I thought the first DVD had a lot of inappropriate behavior and tantrums which we didnt see as much in this movie thank goodness. There were still a couple tantrums and screaming at each other but was toned down a lot.
Those who have seen the first DVD will enjoy seeing the group again and go on their new journey. This journey would have happened soon after the original because the ages and situations are still the same. There are lots of laughs and sad moments too. If you didnt like the first one you probably wont like this one either.
I take one star away because it's so short and needs to be little longer to develop the story. I think the ending should have been more original.
Replay value
We usually rent the Disney movies and see how much replay value it has before purchasing but in this case we just purchased the movie because we were pretty confident that it was going to be great. The kids have already watched it several times and still enjoy watching it so I would say it has high replay value.
