st3rlite's Full Review: Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants is not your average teenage chicks movie. The story line itself rather than focusing on one main character, covers the experiences of four best friends during one life changing summer.
The movie goes back and forth between each of the girls stories as though they were four separate movies, interlinked by the 'Travelling Pants'.
Each of the four girls have very different characters, so watching how each of them live and experience their summer is entertaining in itself. As each story unfolds, each shows a different moral.
Theres Lena (played by Alexis Bledel), the shyest of the group who has never even kissed a boy before. Her part of the movie takes us to Greece where she falls in love for the first time with a local. Her story focuses on the aspects of love and family.
Bridget (played by Blake Lively), is the hot popular girl of the group. More of what you tend to see in teen movies and chick flicks. Her story takes place at a Soccer Camp where the recent death of her mother leads her to behave recklessly, seeking attention from her male counterparts.
The third character is Carmen (played by America Ferrera), the chatty, whiney, over weight Hispanic girl. Over the summer she spends time with her separated father and his new family. Her story is emotional and centres on family and self image.
The last character is Tibby (played by Amber Tamblyn) who is a free spirit at heart. She is the only one of the group who stays at home during the summer holidays, working on her own documentary about real life. During her holidays she crosses paths with a young girl suffering from leukemia and the two become friends. Her story is one of compassion and friendship and seeing life for what it is.
The stories of each of these four characters is tied in together by the 'travelling pants' which are a pair of second hand pants bought by the girls, which magically seem to fit all the girls perfectly despite their different sizes and shapes. An unbelievable scenario but an interesting tie to the stories. The girls make a pact that each will wear the pants during the summer, in order to benefit from the 'magic' of the pants, and then ship the pants off to the next girl in the group with a letter sharing of their experiences over summer.
At the end they reunite and the story concludes.
The movie is quite entertaining and meaningful and is creatively directed and composed. The fact that there are several interlinked stories makes the viewer unlikely to get bored of the movie. However it is more of a 'girly' movie and may not suit the male taste.
The cast played their roles convincingly and the scenes were well shot. All in all it is definately one to watch.
