I am a huge fan of the original version. There's no need to choose one over the other. Both are excellent. I intend to own copies of both.

John Depp is great. What a lunatic. He chooses strange characters and plays them well. His Willy Wonka is exceptional. The Willy Wonka story is told well.

The boat ride is not as creepy as in the first movie; and neither are the Oompa Loompas.

The music and songs are intended to be weird and they certainly are.

The cast is excellent. The special effects are awesome.
