I felt about this film almost exactly how you did. So now I don't feel bad about never finishing a review on it. Nice write-up, and be careful about going to TOO MANY movies in the theater in one year - it can make you blind. What is that, two now for 2005?

:)

Chaddy Wonka,

I felt about this film almost exactly how you did.

Yay! Yay for movie ESP!

So now I don't feel bad about never finishing a review on it.

Boooooo! No, you have to write a review. Epinions and Suepinions demand it (wait - I stole that line from you!).

Nice write-up, and be careful about going to TOO MANY movies in the theater in one year - it can make you blind. What is that, two now for 2005?

Thank you - and I KNOW! What is this?!? It isn't even fall and I've got two under my belt. And isn't there a Harry Potter movie coming out at Thanksgiving? At this pace, who knows? I might even get into the mid-single digits. Whew, I'm tired just thinking about it.

Hugs and Hershey's Kisses,

I'm glad you enjoyed this one since you don't go to the theater too often - though it hasn't been that long since you saw Bewitched has it? ;) and yes there is a new Harry Potter coming in November.

I loved Johnny Depp in this. He is so good at playing characters that are a bit wacky.

I can't wait to see this, but I have a feeling the uneccessary subplot will only induce nausea. What I love about Dahl is that people just are- Wonka is just a looney, Matilda is just a genious, there are giants who eat children- none of this Wonka is a looney cos he had a big bad dad crap.

I too thought the best parts were the scrumptious scenes of candy. It made me very, very, hungry. I also agree that the subplot about father issues was a bit out of place. Great review!

Too bad about the unnecessary sub-plot. Also, don't you think they should have released this at Halloween time? Much better merchandising opportunities, I think.

Marie,

No kidding - I get really cranky when I go to the theater and the movie stinks (like The Village - bah)

though it hasn't been that long since you saw Bewitched has it? ;) and yes there is a new Harry Potter coming in November.

It hasn't been very long! I don't know what's gotten into me. All this "leaving the house" stuff....;)

I'm excited for the next Harry Potter - though I wish they had gotten Cuaron to direct again.

I loved Johnny Depp in this. He is so good at playing characters that are a bit wacky.

He is - he never seems to take a role where the character isn't! I liked his Willy Wonka too.

Munkus,

It isn't great - but it definitely doesn't spoil the rest of the movie.

What I love about Dahl is that people just are- Wonka is just a looney, Matilda is just a genious, there are giants who eat children- none of this Wonka is a looney cos he had a big bad dad crap.

True enough. Maybe that's why it seemed so tacked on. Even with the big bad dad, though, Willy is still plenty loony just because. You have to see it, it's great fun. I think Roald Dahl would approve - Willy isn't nearly as all-knowing as in the first movie, but he's definitely a nut case.

Matt TeeVee,

I can't believe no one has brought up the "tasty review" cliche. Since I'm corny, I'll do it.

Excellent! I can't believe nobody has called me out on the excessive, cavity inducing use of food related descriptors in the review. I couldn't help it though, some things just cry out for excess.

I wasn't interested in this film at all, but now I kind of want to see it. I really didn't like the first, which felt like a bad acid trip. I also don't really care for the story.

Oh, I loved the first one. All that chocolate.....

I was appalled that they were re-making it - until I found out that Depp had been cast as Wonka. It's just perfect.

But it sounds like a good movie anyway. Johnny Depp is never really bad in anything -- in fact, he's always pretty good!

It is good - and you're right, Depp is very rarely bad. He could so easily just play pretty boys all the time, and he never, ever does. Which makes him even cooler.

if love were human it would know me in a lost space come and show me,
hold me and control me and then melt me slowly down, like chocolate

What a great bit of lyric! Anything that equates love with chocolate is a good thing....;)

Which I am very nearly hyperventilating for!

I know what you mean. I loved the last one so I keep making sure that my kids know how excited they should be for the next one. So I can take them, of course, and say they wanted to go.....;)

Michelle,

I too thought the best parts were the scrumptious scenes of candy. It made me very, very, hungry.

I was strong and bought no treats before the movie. I could easily have eaten about a pound of straight chocolate during just that candy room scene...;)

I also agree that the subplot about father issues was a bit out of place.

Yeah, it just didn't fit. The performances and visuals were good, they just didn't seem like they belonged in the same movie.

Great review!

Thank you kindly!

Becky,

Hadn't really thought about that. Maybe they thought it wasn't scary enough for Halloween time. Or ghostly enough or something. For me, all seasons are candy seasons, so it's okay.

Willynocket (or should I perhaps call you Milliwonka instead?)

Smashing review!

I too enjoyed this film immensely, a wonderful smile raiser it was (saw it last night in-fact in a late showing, which meant fortunately there were hardly any obnoxious kids in the cinema aisles).

Definitely one of the more entertaining films of this summer. Whenever cinema seems to be getting boring and bland, you can always count on Tim Burton to make it fresh and exciting again. He did a marvelous job, again.

I thought your review was especially spot on and detailed, particularly your bits about the new Oompa Loompas compared to the old ones and the rather tangenting childhood flashbacks (I really didn't get that bit with the house being transposed into the arctic wilderness without any given reason how or why).

I especially loved this bit: the towering wedding cake of a factory. I really did have an incredible urge to buy some chocholate bars after watching this film, (but somehow I ended up changing my mind and buying a kebab instead).

Personally I loved the darling little brat, Veruca "Daddy, I want another pony!" Salt- the spoilt child in all of us (and British to boot).

I can't wait for the next Harry Potter. Goblet of Fire is my favorite of the books so am looking forward to it. Just hope they don't cut any of the really important stuff out. I've seen the trailer a few times now...and I believe it played with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory here.

He is - he never seems to take a role where the character isn't! I liked his Willy Wonka too.

I think just about every movie I've seen him in has had a character that was wacky in some way. His characters always seem to have quirks of some kind. Makes for very interesting characters. I'm really looking foward to seeing him as Captain Jack Sparrow again. I love that character. I like his Wonka too. He was a bit..odd, but I didn't get the freaky vibe from him that some people said they did.

Tommy Bucket,

Smashing review!

Thank you, sir!

I too enjoyed this film immensely, a wonderful smile raiser it was (saw it last night in-fact in a late showing, which meant fortunately there were hardly any obnoxious kids in the cinema aisles).

It's such fun. I brought both my kids and they agreed. Fortunately for me, they didn't feel the need to dance in the aisles....;)

Whenever cinema seems to be getting boring and bland, you can always count on Tim Burton to make it fresh and exciting again. He did a marvelous job, again.

He certainly has a way with effects and visuals in general. It's very distinctive, his style, but always fun.

I thought your review was especially spot on and detailed, particularly your bits about the new Oompa Loompas compared to the old ones and the rather tangenting childhood flashbacks (I really didn't get that bit with the house being transposed into the arctic wilderness without any given reason how or why).

I really liked these Oompa Loompas - I loved that they were all one guy in different outfits. He was perfect! The childhood flashbacks, well, I guess I can't expect every part of a film to be exactly to my liking. I suppose they were sort of cute, but they didn't cut it for me. I know why the house was transposed, but if I tell you it'll be a spoiler - you can drop me an email if you want my theory...;)

I especially loved this bit: the towering wedding cake of a factory. I really did have an incredible urge to buy some chocholate bars after watching this film, (but somehow I ended up changing my mind and buying a kebab instead).

I wanted chocolate the entire time. I felt a little like I could become Augustus Gloop, given the chance. But I too fought the urge. Maybe because I didn't go home to a chocolate factory....

Personally I loved the darling little brat, Veruca "Daddy, I want another pony!" Salt- the spoilt child in all of us (and British to boot).

She was okay - but I loved the first one much more. Perhaps this one simply wasn't given as much time to be her wonderful, horrible self. I loved Violet, though.

Marie,

I remember reading your review of that one and how you felt about it.

Yeah, I didn't like it so well.......

You keep this pace up and you might start seeing as many as I do.

I would love that! School is starting soon, I'm going to have to make a concerted effort to see matinees.

I can't wait for the next Harry Potter. Goblet of Fire is my favorite of the books so am looking forward to it. Just hope they don't cut any of the really important stuff out. I've seen the trailer a few times now...and I believe it played with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory here.

My son has seen the trailer but I haven't. I was hoping it would play before this film, but it didn't. Goblet of Fire is also my favorite of the books so far (I haven't yet read number six) so I'm eager to see it on the big screen.

I'm really looking foward to seeing him as Captain Jack Sparrow again. I love that character. I like his Wonka too. He was a bit..odd, but I didn't get the freaky vibe from him that some people said they did.

Yay for Cap'n Jack! Someone actually gave me a framed picture of him for my birthday (gag gift, of course - not that I won't keep it on my bedside table....;). Do you know when the first sequel is coming out?

I didn't get the freakish vibe from Depp either. I know a couple of people who hated the movie because they thought he was too Michael Jackson-ish - but I really didn't see the character that way.

Matinees are usually less crowded too. I do prefer it when the crowds aren't too huge.

My son has seen the trailer but I haven't. I was hoping it would play before this film, but it didn't. Goblet of Fire is also my favorite of the books so far (I haven't yet read number six) so I'm eager to see it on the big screen.

I've seen the trailer for Goblet of Fire at the theater two or three times now. I did just read something about the movie..the whole S.P.E.W. thing that Hermione was doing in the book didn't make it to the movie. That doesn't bother..that wasn't one of my favorite parts of the book and it wasn't really important to the overall story.

Yay for Cap'n Jack! Someone actually gave me a framed picture of him for my birthday (gag gift, of course - not that I won't keep it on my bedside table....;). Do you know when the first sequel is coming out?

I went out and bought a Captain Jack poster. Need to frame it now. :)
I think the first sequel is due out next summer. And from what I have seen a third movie will be out in summer of 2007.

I didn't get the freakish vibe from Depp either. I know a couple of people who hated the movie because they thought he was too Michael Jackson-ish - but I really didn't see the character that way.

I didn't either. Depp's Wonka was wacky and a bit kooky..but that is very different from Michael Jackson freakish. At least I think so.

MQS,

Ok, sleep has been had.. lots of it..

A Johnny Depp Sundae with Tim Burton Sprinkles

Life would be lovely if could actually buy those from the local Ice-cream vendor.. one can dream...

used to play once a year on TV when I was a kid

Ooooh.. It still does play here once (sometimes twice even! Christmas and Easter) And I too find it all very delicious, but I'm a chocolate freak.

a saucy and tart performance by Depp

All I have to say to that is.. "Yummm, I'm hungry"

Of course I shall watch this, though I'll wait for the DVD (I have a thing about Cinemas.. I can't get comfy) I remember when I first heard Depp would be playing Wonka, it immediately felt right. I was watching a film review show recently, and the reviewer said it was utterly delightful. Perhaps even better than the original. Then they spent a good 5 minutes discussing Le Depp's BIG smile in the movie. I don't blame them, it can be nice to look at.. ;)

As always.. wonderbra!!

Cheers m'dear,

They're great - cheaper, less crowded, don't have to pay a sitter. All good things.

the whole S.P.E.W. thing that Hermione was doing in the book didn't make it to the movie. That doesn't bother..that wasn't one of my favorite parts of the book and it wasn't really important to the overall story.

I'm so glad they chose that part to cut! It annoys me anyway. I'm re-reading book five before I read six and Hermione is driving me nuts still with it.

I think the first sequel is due out next summer. And from what I have seen a third movie will be out in summer of 2007.

Perfect summer movies. I wonder if I can get a good seat if I start lining up in, say, February....;)

I didn't either. Depp's Wonka was wacky and a bit kooky..but that is very different from Michael Jackson freakish. At least I think so.

I agree. If he did remind me of Jackson, the whole thing would have given me the creeps, but he didn't, so it didn't. I actually liked the weird hair and the big teeth and the unhealthy, never-been-outside pallor. It worked well.

Jack,

Speaking from past experience?

Of course not! I am the essence of all things pure and innocent. Mostly.

I think you mean the floor. That's why I never wear my good shoes to the theatre, where the combination of Gummy Bears and spilt soda really makes quite the sticky combination.

The floor of the theater in which we saw this very movie was, in fact, rather foul and covered an unidentifiable stickiness. I try not to think too much about how many layers of crud that stuff represents.

Yes, but Burton should be past that already.

Yeah, he probably should. But it was amusing in a nostalgic sort of way. Not enough to save the plot line, but amusing.

I've the feeling that Burton tacked this on just to provide one of his all-time favorite actors with a plum role.

I just read - in some other comment section somewhere, I think - the suggestion that Lee would have made a fabulous Slugworth, and he would have! This version is closer to the book version, which maybe didn't have Slugworth, but still, he would have been great as the arch villain rival candy maker.
