Last year, Vince Vaughn was in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, what turned out to be one of my favorite movies of the year. This year he has already been in Be Cool and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, two movies that I also really enjoyed. I’ve discovered that I like Vaughn and that was a major reason of why I wanted to see Wedding Crashers. I also tend to like Owen Wilson, so that was another reason I wanted to see the movie.
John and Jeremy worked as divorce mediators and were best friends. They crashed weddings whenever they could. They had rules for crashing and came up with elaborate back stories to explain how they were connected to the couple. John and Jeremy did all that just to pick up women for casual sex. They found out that the daughter of Treasury Secretary Cleary was getting married and decided to crash the wedding. Jeremy picked out Gloria, the youngest Cleary daughter for his target. John was interested in Claire, the middle daughter. Jeremy was successful with Gloria on the beach during the reception. He was horrified when she was clingy afterward and started talking about love and how happy they would be.
John was able to spend a little time with Claire and they did seem to hit it off, but she had a boyfriend, Sack. John wasn’t ready to give up and he jumped at the chance to go with the Cleary family and spend a few days. Jeremy wanted nothing to do with the trip because he didn’t want to be around Gloria, but he ended up going. Once at the house, it became clear that Claire was the only truly normal one. Jeremy ended up in some unique situations because of Gloria. John said that he had real feelings for Claire and he was determined to try to develop a relationship, even after what happened with her mother Kathleen.
I thought that Wedding Crashers was a funny movie. The movie made me laugh many times. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn each had several funny scenes both together and alone. They had good chemistry and worked well together. Gloria’s actions added humor to several scenes. Much of the humor in the movie was adult in nature and could be considered crude by some people. There were many jokes that were sexual in nature and could offend some viewers. The laughs started early in the movie and continued until the end. There were a few more serious moments in the movie, but even some of those had some humor added in.
Most movies seem to be rated PG-13 in an attempt to appeal to the largest possible audience. Studios have made movies edit more just so they would get the PG-13 rating. Wedding Crashers is one of the few movies that didn’t avoid the R rating. I had heard some interviews with different people related to the movie that a decision was made to earn the R rating. It worked for this movie. Several things just wouldn’t have worked or been as funny if the studio had insisted on the movie receiving a PG-13 rating. Some of the funniest scenes wouldn’t have made it into the movie. The movie did deserve the R, and it isn’t one for children, but it wasn’t crammed full of nudity and swearing. The word that rhymes with luck was used several times, but it wasn’t used as much as it has been in some movies. Some people may be offended by some things in the movie. This isn’t a movie for everyone, but it was entertaining.
There were several sexual situations throughout Wedding Crashers. John and Jeremy crashed all the weddings with the sole purpose of finding women for one night stands. There was some nudity in the movie. It probably could have been left out, but it wasn’t excessive and I didn’t think it was offensive. Early in the movie there was a scene that showed John and Jeremy in action at several different weddings. The women they hooked up with were featured and most of them were briefly shown topless. The movie didn’t linger on the bare breasts which may disappoint some male viewers. A bit later in the movie, Gloria briefly turned up naked. Kathleen had one scene where she showed off her new implants to another character. She wasn’t shown from the front. That was it for nudity in the movie.
Wedding Crashers started out being an adult sex comedy but some romance elements were added later. Even though John had enjoyed crashing the weddings, he did have some moments where he felt differently. Jeremy did seem to be more enthusiastic about still going after casual sex. John did act like he was more interested in Claire as a whole person and not just a woman to get into bed when they first met. He put a lot of effort into the relationship and said he had real feelings for her. There were some obstacles to the relationship which is normal for a romantic comedy. Some predictable things happened, but there was also a surprise or two as well. I wasn’t bothered by the predictable aspects since it was an entertaining movie.
Wedding Crashers had a great cast. I have enjoyed Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in several other movies, and they were the main reason that I decided to watch the movie. I liked both of them in their parts. They were likable even though they weren’t being honest and were just after sex. Gloria acted silly and ditzy at times and became extremely clingy after she had sex with Jeremy. Isla Fisher was very good in the part. She made the character work without going over board. Rachel McAdams was very good as Claire, the only normal member of her family. She seemed to be conflicted about her relationship with Sack.
Sack was cocky and didn’t treat Claire very nice. He and Claire had known each other for years. Bradley Cooper was fine in the part. Christopher Walken and Jayne Seymour didn’t have many scenes at all as Claire and Gloria’s parents. They had very few lines in the scenes they did have. They really didn’t have enough to do. Dwight Yoakam, Rebecca DeMornay, and Will Ferrell all had small roles in the movie as well. Ferrell’s part was small, but his character was a bit annoying.
