Cons:syndication.

The Bottom Line: Don't let the fact the episodes are synicated they really are good

I got Alf Season 2 a couple of years ago and have decided to go rewatch it a 2nd time for a review since I got season 3 and 4 a couple of months ago. If you’re too young to remember Alf, it was a sit com in the 80’s staring an alien named Alf. Alf crash landed into the garage of the Tanners at the beginning of the first season and in the 2nd season he has been there over a year. The Tanners being a mild manner family of 4 with the Dad Willy being a bit nerdy and uptight, the mom Kate who gets easily annoy with Alf’s antics, there teenaged daughter Lin, and easily gullible young son named Brain. The Tanners find raising an alien is tougher then it looks has Alf can be selfish, disastrously clumsy, and since his planet blew up compel to sever brought of guilt and depression. Add in plenty of fish out of water scenarios and Alf can be a handful.

Alf is of course played either by a muppet (which he is 90% of the time) or in far away shots he is a dwarf in the costume, all though we see less of these far away shots has time goes on. But that’s ok the puppeting and the voice work is great that Alf becomes a real character soon enough. And he is genuine funny most of the time all though you do start to wonder how many times can he blow up the Tanners kitchen before they decide to gift wrap him to the Alien Task Force (a small part of the show but people Alf tries to avoid).

The 2nd season has pretty much all my favorite episodes in the one to get. There are several great episodes on the set. In one episode Alf gets a dummy which is ruder bigger jerk then he is (and I like the fact that a puppet has a puppet). In another one Alf catches the case of the Malmacean hiccups, different then human hiccups these can destory glass furniture’s and can last more then 50 years if Alf doesn’t drink fresh squeezed cat juice. And he gets them the day before Kates Mother wedding is suppose to happen. In then in another great episode Brian gets picked on by a bully and all though Kate and Willy try to talk to the father of the bully they both end up beating him up and throwing him out of the house; this causes Alf to proclaim them has He-Man and She-ra Masters of the neighborhood.

There are also some other good ones were Alf wrecks Willy’s Halloween party by showing up with a zipper attached to himself so people think he’s a costume, and another one were Kate’s friend stays over for the night and Alf finds her so stoned she doesn’t even recognize that he’s an alien

There is also a new character in Jake the nephew of the Okmonics the Tanners nosey next door neighbors. Jakes father has been send to prison so he’s been adopted by his aunt and uncle. Jake discovers Alf by accident and when Alf is the first person to discover there is good in Jake, and both have a habit of getting into trouble they become fast friends.

The DVD’s
Ok I’ll start with the big 800 pound gorilla in the room all the episodes in the box set with the exception of the Christmas special are cut syndicated episodes. 2 to 3 minutes of each episode has been cut, the reason why because NBC masters of the network version aren’t in good shape and Lionsgate was to lazy to clean them up. In the mean time we are stuck watching cut episodes in till someone decides to do it right, and demand more money from the fans of the show.

That said there are a lot of good things about the box set, first off they threw away the jumbled mess that was inside the case of the first one and gave us flaps that make it easier to take care of the discs, always a plus.

Like season 1 the menus each start with a skid, the last time was Alf manning a phone with his agent making sure he got the FBI warning on the disc set. This time Alf has started his own shopping networks with his hot super model Brittney to sell products. Like the Alf cookie jar which can hold snails, slugs, worms, and if you’re a vegetarian cookies. The jokes are good for a chuckle and worth sitting through at least once. The menus set up like last time were each episode appears in it’s own little box with a question mark beside it, the question mark will have Alf tell you what the episode is about.

Now for the really good part when it comes to extra this out of the 4 season has the most worth watching. We get 2 episodes of the animated Alf the cartoon show that showed on NBC Saturday morning line up (yes Alf was that big of a hit back in the day kiddies). The first one has him on planet Melmac during his days in orbit guard, and the 2nd has him playing Robin Hood. While not quite has good as the live action the comedy still works and because he’s free of the Tanners we get to see him more liberated and around people of his own race, he still is a clumsy destructive little alien.

Then comes the Alf the Christmas special which is an hour long and uncut for a change. In this one the Tanners decide to go to a cabin that is owned by a good friend of Willy’s. Alf being greedy trouble maker that he is switches the tags on the Christmas present and after the scolding he gets in by Willy decides to leave on a back of a truck driven by a man who is going to play Santa at a local hospital at Christmas eve. There Alf meets and cheers up a sick little girl who is celebrating her last Christmas on earth when she picks him has a toy off of Santa’s sleight. He also helps deliver a baby and stop a good man from committing suicide. All of these scenes are done pretty well they still have Alf’s cynical sense of humor but they can all be quite touching to.

Final Recommendation.
My favorite episode of the shows can be found in season 2 plus 2 episodes of the cartoon, and a pretty good Christmas special. Out of the 4 season sets this is the one to pick up.
