Barbie Magic of Pegasus is the newest Barbie movie that was released September 20, 2005. This is the first Barbie movie that has 3-D animation and quite a selling point if you ask my daughter.
There are two versions of this story on the DVD. One is the typical movie which can be viewed without glasses. Theres also an option to see the identical movie in 3-D format. There are 4 paper 3-D glasses included inside the DVD shell.
The movie is 85 minutes long but only 15 minutes use the glasses for 3-D viewing. The little bear appears in the top corner to let the viewer know that its time to put the glasses on or to take them off. My daughter said the glasses are magic and it makes the things come into her eyeballs which she said made the movie more fun. They work better when its darker in the room.
About Barbie Movies
A couple movies come out each year featuring Barbie. This movie was produced by Lions Gate Entertainment with license from Mattel, Inc. The whole movie is animated as in computer generated. The setting is very colorful featuring all the colors that girls love like pinks and purples. The female dresses are beautiful like gowns. The horse is pastel and absolutely beautiful.
In this story, Barbies name is Princess Annika. She is the age of a teen. She fits the typical Barbie doll image and is complemented with a great inner strength and a likeable personality.
Description of the movie
The story opens up with the King and Queen looking for the beautiful Princess Annika. They are very nervous because they think that she is missing. The princess is ice skating, one of her most favorite pastimes, and finds a bear for a friend. She names her Shiver and takes him home with her. When she arrives home the parents are relieved to see her and scorn her for leaving without their permission. They forbid her to go out and over react like most parents do. The princess goes to her room and complains and decides to sneak out to go to a party.
She runs into Wenlock, an evil wizard, who proposes to the princess. The parents step up and tell him to beat it. He reveals that the princess has a sister which she didnt know that she had. He froze the whole town and told her that if she didnt marry him the spell would be irreversible.
The princess is saved by a flying pink horse named Brietta and takes her to another kingdom. The princess learns about how her sister was turned into a flying horse when her father denied the marriage between his daughter and Wenlock.
The princess learns that the wand of light is the only thing that can defeat the wizards power but it doesnt actually exist. It has to be made.
Annika goes into the the dark forest to look for the parts for the wand. She runs into the handsome Aden who doesnt buy the story that she tells about the mythical wand of light. Aden and Annika dont get along very well but pal up anyway.
Annika, Aden, Brietta and Shiver continue their journey to find the three parts to build the wand of light. They crack the clues and overcome the challenges as you would expect.
Near the end of the movie we learn why Aden hangs out in the forest. When he was younger he made a mistake and lost all of his parents money. He thought by helping Annika he may find a chance to make it up to his parents.
Once the wand is completed they need to test it to make sure it works. They ask the spell on Brietta to be broken and it works. Annika and Aden part ways. Annika tried to used the wand for things it wasnt intended for and it doesnt work out for her. Wenlock gets mad and tries to kill her by burying her in snow.
Aden joins back up with the girls and helps get the wand back from Wenlock and breaks all of the evil spells that Wenlock has placed on people.
I dont think this was the best storyline or the best Barbie movie that weve seen. The storyline is good in that it is simple for children to understand and doesnt involve a lot of nastiness or excessive evil.
My 3-year-old really enjoyed watching this but I think its designed so that older girls would love it. My 5-year-old who is a Barbie fanatic liked the movie but wasnt overjoyed with it. They have the Barbie dress up costume that complements the movie. They enjoy role-playing by pretending that they are the characters in this movie which is what they normally do after watching a movie that they like. My girls seemed to like the horse a lot more than the princess.
One thing that is missing from this movie compared to other Barbie movies is the singing and dancing. There wasnt any of that in this movie.
This has a detailed adventure and the kids can anticipate what comes next. A lot of information is given right away in the beginning describing why her sister is a horse and what she needs to do to break the spell. The adventure to find the three items to build the wand was fairly short. The final adventure to get the wand away from Wenlock took a lot of time. Thats when Barbie did the most personal growth and learning that she couldnt get the wand to do things out of meaness.
I liked how the relationship between Annika and Aden wasnt a fairytale romance. It was more of a realistic relationship. They begin by not liking each other at all then getting to know each other slowly. In the end theyre more like best friends. Wenlocks three wives also stay with him after they are set free from the spell which was different.
I liked how the evil ones didnt die in this movie. They lost their powers and returned to normal. I didnt think the bad guy was that bad and not scary at all but my daughter thought he was mean and scary.
My 5-year-old says her favorite part of the movie is the glasses. She also liked the purple dress, the flying pony, and the little kids. The little kids look like Kelly dolls.
