Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
A while back, I made a decision to eliminate cable in my house, in order to lower my expenses, not because I really needed to have the extra money, but because it didn't really make sense to pay for something that I didn't even really use. The $80/month that I saved I decided could go towards the purchase of DVDs which I was much more apt to watch anyway. Even while I had cable, I found that I would scour the bargain bins looking for some great classic movies, taking advantage of columbia house sales whenever they had them, and finding some amazing deals on half.com. But now that I had an additional $80 to spend on DVDs, I decided that I was going to limit myself to $100/month on new movies. This of course is a pretty substantial amount of money when you are a bargain shopper like myself. I am always looking for new movies that I can purchase for as low of a price as humanly possible.
One of the movies that I purchased a few months back in a huge lot sale at a garage sale, was The 40 Year Old Virgin. I hadn't seen it yet, and all of my friends kept talking about it. I was hearing all sorts of good things about the movie, and I figured it was about time that I took advantage of the opportunity to purchase it and watch it.

The Plot
The plot of the movie is extremely simple, the main character, Andy, played by Steve Carell is a 40 year old man, who has never had sex. Andy works in a comfortable job at an electronics store, has a decent apartment, and really is comfortable in his life, he's just never gotten around to having sex. In fact, he's never even come close to having sex.
The other guys in the store come to find out during a poker game that Andy is a virgin, and after mocking him for a while, decide that they have to do something to help him out. The group begins a campaign to do whatever they can to help Andy talk to women better, dress better, and act a hell of a lot cooler than he was. They also tried to help him upgrade his life so that he would be more attractive to women.
Unfortunately, everything that the guys tried seemed to backfire somehow. Andy somehow would manage to blow every opportunity that he had and would end up back where he had started, with just a little added experience in the process.
One day, Andy meets a woman that walks into the electronics store, Trish, Catherine Keener who owns her own "Ebay auction store". Andy is immediately blown away by Trish and tries to use the skills that he has learned in order to lure her in. Trish, a mother of three, has her deal of baggage and once her and Andy start dating, she insists on a no sex policy, which will only be broken after they went on a specific number of dates. This of course, is to the disappointment of Andy's coworkers.
The Cast
The cast is excellent together in this movie, which revolves highly around the interpersonal communication between the different members of the cast. Without the hilarious dialogue and well thought out conversations, this movie would have most definitely tanked.
The actors talked to Andy as most would talk to someone that is a bit unusual, while at the same time, intriguing. I just saw myself acting the same way towards him as his coworkers were, and really felt the relationships between them all as being quite realistic for the situation.
The Comedy
The comedy involved in the movie is pretty insane at times. The obvious ability to use this man who has never really dated, place him in awkward situations and see what happens, creates some pretty funny moments.
Each of the coworkers has their own method of picking up women, all of which are horribly suited for Andy, but he tries them all nonetheless. It is hilarious to watch as Andy messes up each of the methods with the different women, generally confusing them, yet keeping them interested at the same time.
The writing was geared towards taking advantage of comedic opportunities throughout the movie, without any overwhelming comedy at any given point, and without any real lag in comedic performances. This made the movie hugely funny and made it nearly non stop throughout the movie.
Final Thoughts
A great cast of characters, with a strong script makes for an excellent comedy that is filled with laughs. While the great deal of the comedy is spread out and will not make you laugh overwhelmingly, the comedy is so comedy is so constant that you won't have an opportunity to get up without missing something wonderfully hilarious.
Essentially if you are looking for a interesting movie concept, that is filled with humor, then this is a great selection to choose.
