Chaos: A Sickeningly Horrible "Horror" Movie

Pros:Um. Err. Uh. No.
Cons:From script to acting to cast to story to editing to direction...it is all awful.
The Bottom Line: I have an excuse for watching--my tickets were free. Do yourself a favor and run the other direction far away from Chaos.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

The only thing really disturbing about Chaos is how bad the movie actually is. The violence and language don’t bother me, but the horrid acting, awful direction, and complete lack of originality are unforgivable. Chaos is quite clearly a facsimile of Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left. I’m no fan-girl of that movie, but in the grand scheme of things there really is no comparison. Chaos is a mess of a movie.

As with the movie it is “inspired by” there are two teenage girls. One is outgoing and wild (Angelica in this case) and the other is somewhat naïve and introspective (Emily). The two girls decide to go to a rave in the middle of the California forest and want to score some ecstasy (or “e” as they repeatedly beat the audience with). If you’ve seen Last House you know what happens. The girls of course run into an unsavory and rather unintelligent young man who promises them drugs. He lures them back to his crazy family and friends—this time in a backwoods cottage.

It is at this point that Chaos twirls out of control. It is hilarious and campy but is intended to be frightening. Too bad that the acting is so bad and so out of control that it comes across as nothing short of comedic. All comedy aside, the two girls are about to meet with dreadful deaths. Considering the awful and unemotional screams from Angelica (Chantal Degroat) it was actually a relief when she met her maker at the hands of Chaos (Kevin Gage), Frankie (Stephen Wozniak), Daisy (Kelly K.C. Quann), and Swan (Sage Stallone). I will say that the manner that this young blonde girl died was creative, but it so lacked any real motivation or even emotion that I didn’t care. I don’t think anybody cared—the whole audience broke down in laughter.

By virtue of being on screen slightly longer, I was slightly more attached to Emily (Maya Barovich) whose parents are also featured throughout the story. I still didn’t like her and was rather ambivalent about her impending murder (like I said, if you’ve seen Last House you have seen this movie save for a few small changes) but when it came I was definitely shocked. Again, I must admit that the director was creative in finding the nastiest way to suck the life out of her (or in his words “to make one hole where there used to be two”).

What will happen to the four perverted, insane, murderous, and necrophiliac baddies? You’ve seen it all before if you have watched many horror movies. Even worse is the fact that in an apparent last minute attempt to not come off as a completely unoriginal copycat, director David DeFalco has switched the ending ever so slightly up. There is death and mayhem carried out by chainsaws, shotguns, and screwdrivers but who ends up dead will come as a mild surprise. It says something about a movie when you don’t care who ends up alive or dead and you don’t care how things wrap up. None of it matters in Chaos.

It’s a rare day when I see a movie this truly nasty. I’m fine with the gore and I’m fine with the basic idea of Chaos. What I’m not fine with are the wooden performances, bad editing, atrocious and repetitive script, and complete lack of originality. Like I said it was apparently inspired after Last House on the Left. I would take that a giant leap further and say that DeFalco clearly shot this movie scene-for-scene after Craven’s original. He then goes on to play it off as having been researched and based on reality. In the words that open the movie it is even boldly positioned as some sort of educational piece. Eh. Whatever. There’s not a damn thing educational about Chaos except to filmmakers. This is precisely the kind of movie that nobody should make—everything about it is wrong.

Taken out of context the deaths of Angelica and Emily are twisted and terrifying. However when you consider the whole of Chaos they loose oomph and aren’t really all that memorable nor are they particularly jarring. There will certainly be kids who will ignorantly insist the same thing as the publicity folks this is the “scariest and most brutal film ever.” I would edit that to reflect reality. Chaos is the “dumbest and most unoriginal film ever.” It is so completely not fun that I see it as having no redeeming value whatsoever. It is a rare day when I don’t get some joy out of horror. Today is that day.

*One final character note, Daisy is listed as Sadie nearly everywhere on the internet. She is clearly referred to as Daisy in Chaos and on the official website. If you care (and I seriously doubt you do).

Curious about the similarities between Chaos and Last House on the Left? Check out my review of the 1972 film:
