MGM released Stargate Atlantis in 2004 after seeing how popular Stargate SG-1 became. The first season was 20 episodes and each episode is one hour long. This is the start of another science fiction shooting to popularity the first year.
Episode one and two is the beginning of the great find called Atlantis. This is a city that the Ancients left behind. In these two episode you will meet some of the main characters. Like Dr. Elizabeth Weir, who is the leader of the group. The people who got to go to Atlantis are all very smart and specialist. Rodney McKay is another long running character. He is a very annoying person. However, this man is very smart. He is a scientist that can save Atlantis and it's people. He is scared of everything and the only time he is a brilliant genius is when he is being threatened with death. John Sheppard is the military leader of the group. He loves to fly. He is also one of a few who can operate anything Ancient. It seems there is a gene in his DNA that lets him do this. Tayla is a leader of her tribe and an inhabitant of one of the planets McKay and Sheppard visit. During this visit Sheppard and Tayla become friends.
The first two episodes also introduces you to the Wraith. These Wraith are not exactly human. These people are like vampires in a way. They feed on the life force of humans. They have like suction cups on their left hands. Once the hand is put on the heart of the human they drain them of their life force. The special effects at this point are very good. You get to watch a human age and turn to bones right before your eyes.
The rest of the episodes will take you to other planets in the Pegasus galaxy. You will meet more people that are human but different from us. Some of these people will become our friends and others well they won't like us so much. You will find each planet has its own religion and customs. Some of these people will be more advanced than us and other more primitive.
The special effects are very good as well. The flying ships they use called jumpers are small shuttles. There is also a large Stargate that they go through when traveling to another planet.
The whole first year is spend learning about the new city they live in and the people around them. They also have to fend off the enemy in between.
This DVD set is worth the money to watch whenever you want. The set has special features like commentaries on some of the episodes and photo galleries. MGM was not sure this show was going to go any where so they did not plan for a second year. Well to their surprise Stargate Atlantis got great reviews and they were going to go into the second season
