Ah, the sequel. Like leftovers, rarely as good as the first time. Underworld Evolution is leftovers. It was more good eatin' but not as good as the original. The most interesting part for me was that number 2 explained number 1. I loved Underworld and am fascinated by the vampire genre. I did want more from this movie.
Amped Up
This was definitely more Underworld. Everything was amped up: The blood & violence was consistent. The fighting faster paced. I heard the director call this 'sexier' and it was. Was it needed? Not really. A love story can exist without seeing it happen. If you wanted that, you got it.
Black Ops
If you like the black and covert operations aspect of Underworld, you got more. More technology, more killing gadgets, and more ways to see vampires & lycans (werewolves) die. More is well, more but not necessarily better.
Questions
The sequel still did leave some questions.
1. Throughout the movie, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is using a flashlight in the dark. Do vampires need flashlights? I didn't think so.
2. How can vampires and lycans 'turn' so quickly? I liked the idea that you thought they were dead for a while then they come back. I won't give any details but the bite of a lycan or vampire is now a superserum that transforms people immediately. I'm uncertain how these creatures can live in an 'Underworld' when the change is so quick.
The Story
The story was more complicated yet I found it less interesting. Okay, I was curious why vampires and lycans would fight. I did want to know Selene's back story. But after seeing why, I'm okay with two creatures of the night getting along. After all, how could two incredibly powerful being that feast on humans like cattle get along? I suppose vampires and lycans fight. That should have been good enough for me and the Underworld staff.
Summary:
In the end, this was a fun romp through through vampire-land but not as satisfying as the original.
