Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
So here we are. At number 3 in this franchise about cheating death. Who knew the series would go this far? It all started in 2000 with a film called Final Destination. A movie about a group of young adults cheating death with Alex Browning's help. A sequel spawned in 2003 with a few people returning to reprise their role in the first one. Now in 2006, a third installment has been born. Will it be the best one of the series or the worst? I wouldn't technically call it better than the others nor would I call it the worst. I actually found part 3 to be a really good movie and it surprised me because I really had low expectations.
The story still stays true to the last two, but this time, the whole movie revolves around a roller coaster(Devil's Flight) where Mary Elizabeth Winstead has a vision of the roller coaster falling off the tracks. She warns her friends and others, some get off and some stay. Unfortunately, the vision becomes true and now, the Grim Reaper is out to get the ones that had gotten off the roller coaster before the accident. Now, the survivors are running out of time to cheat their death. The way this death system works is that whoever was sitting in the seats(front, middle back) were in the order they were going to die.
Just the thought of the premise of these three films are quite scary because I know some of you readers would be suspicious of your everyday doings after seeing this film. Heck, I am and I promise you I will never get on a roller coaster. This movie, you may have to see the other two movies to understand it, but this movie does recap you on the other two so you may not have to see it after all, but I suggest you do. Especially part two. In Part 3, I really like the fact this movie uses clues(photographs taken on the roller coaster) to help you solve how each person will die and it'll make you think. This is a smart thriller just like the other two. It has some of the most creative kills(minus the first two ladies that get burned--cliche!). Oh, and the gore is plenty. Viewers that like their kills original and wet with ordinary things WILL enjoy the kill scenes.
But that doesn't mean viewers that like good action scenes wouldn't enjoy this film either. It has some great action scenes(some very intense sequences by the way) and the way these deaths are "set-up" are mind-blowing. I mean, it must have taken the director or whoever was in charge with the death scenes, a lot of time to think up these deaths. The kills and the gore are excellent ingredients for a great thriller, but that isn't all this movie has in store for you. The special effects were amazing as well. Although, CGI was used quite often in this film, I think it made the film work really well. The roller coaster "freak-accident" did look fake, but hey, they couldn't use a real accident, right? The kills looked great even though they are fast. Please, don't blink.
Director, James Wong, whom is the screenwriter and producer of the film, did an extremely well job on this flick. The roller coaster ride scene was amazingly well shot while the rest was nothing to brag about, but it wasn't bad directing either. The kill scenes were pulled off nicely with Wong's directing and it made the kill scenes more suspenseful. And yes, he did direct the other two FDs. The script wasn't perfect for sure. It did have a few rough edges surrounding the lead girl hurrying up to tell the victim to watch out! when they are about to die. Other than that, the script was pretty good. The music was absolutely perfect for this film. Great up-tempo stuff to get the blood pumping!
Although, the almost entire cast is unknown, the cast was decent for the film. Starring is Mary Elizabethe Winstead, Ryan Merriman, Texas Battle, Amanda Crew, Sam Easton and Patrick Gallagher. Mary "E" Winstead was rough for the first 15 minutes, but after that, she became really good with her emotions and she played the role real well. Ryan Merriman is a person you know by face, but not by name. He has appeared in big Hollywood movies(Halloween: Resurrection). He did real well in this film, his emotions were on the spot and the role was greatly played by Ryan. The rest of the cast was good as well. Again, no one was the "big star" in this film, nor was anyone low enough to be a bad person to be in the film. Everyone did fine with their role.
With $54,098,051 made at the box office, Final Destination 3 did make a nice chunk of change and I believe the movie deserves that much publicity(it would have been nice to see the movie advertised more). This is a smart thriller with lots of wet gore, great action sequences and creative kills that will make you say Damn!
