Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
There seems to be a school of thought out there. That kids don't care about the movies they watch, and if you put together a half-baked plot involving talking animals, throw in a few famous names for voice actors and jokes for the adults, you'll have a financial success.
It worked well enough for a lot of films. Open Season managed to make $85 million, and Ice Age has 3 films at this point.
But it just did not work for Doogal, which managed $7.4 million in the box office, ranking it 62nd out of 67 computer animated films that have been released in theaters. And there is a good reason why. It's awful.
They just threw together a horrible story about some candy-obsessed dog who goes on adventures to stop evil wizards. It's rife with pointless references to much better films, such as Lord of the Rings. This film has absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever.
There is no point in renting or buying this film for your children. It is an insult to their intelligence, and not something that they would enjoy. If you want to have a good time with your kids, watch a classic CGI cartoon or a regular cartoon, or even a live action family film. The kids would be better off watching films meant for adults anyway. There is nothing good about this film. Not even a heavy-handed "moral" tacked on at the end.
This film was the start of the decline of CGI animation into the cesspool that it has become, excluding Pixar's films and most of Dreamworks.
