The Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drift ---- Flashy Cars with a Japanese twist

Feb 10, 2007 (Updated Feb 10, 2007)
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:some cool looking cars

Cons:underwhelming action and racing, very wooden characters, not a really talented cast

The Bottom Line: A very weak story dragged this film down, and the lack of true excitement coupled with the unrealistic characters really sank this film.

The Fast and the Furious 3 was released in 2006, trying to capitalize on the success and popularity of the first two films. Gone is main character Paul Walker though, and the only resemblance of this film to the first two is that there is car racing. It's not as though the first two had real plots either, but when it came to the story of this film, it was extremely weak.

Lucas Black (kid from Sling Blade) plays southern-boy Sean Boswell, who finds himself in trouble after street racing against a fellow high-school student. The damage and destruction they leave in their wake puts Lucas under arrest, and his mother convinces the police to overlook it if he leaves town. So off to Japan goes Sean to live with his military father and attend a new high-school.

It is pretty clear that Sean doesn't really fit in, and the relationship with his father can be described as strained at best. Not only does he not want to be there, but he completely out of his element. That is, until he strikes up a friendship with a military brat by the name of Twinkie, who introduces him to a new form of street racing. "Drifting" as they call it, is the Japanese equivalent that runs with lighter cars, and thinner tires, with the object relying more on control of the car than powering down a straightaway.

As would be expected, Sean finds himself in trouble, as the nephew of a Yakuza member named D.K. (Drift King) takes a disliking to him right from their first meeting. Predictably, they must face-off in a race, and borrowing someone else's car, Sean flat out destroys it trying to compete. He quickly becomes addicted to the style of racing though, and gets the chance to practice with the car of another Japanese racer that takes a liking to him.

There really isn't much to the story in this film, as it is really just a set of excuses to race through the streets of Tokyo, and place the characters in different levels of peril within their cars. From the very start of the film, you already know that it is going to come down to a race between Sean and D.K. to decide who is the best at drifting, and flaky sub-plots are just thrown into the mix to extend the film long enough to reach that race.

There were numerous problems that I had with this film that included the half-baked plot and the stereotypical roles given to actors that didn't have much of a script to work with. In addition to that, most of the races were lacking the drama needed to make them interesting or intense. This led to a negative opinion on the film and its characters, and far too many of the action sequences turned into cliches that we have all seen before. Flashy cars do not make a film, and I don't recommend this one.
