Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
I didn't love the premise right from the start, but I hoped it would be exciting. Turns out I should have gone with my first instinct and put back The Keeper.
Dennis Hopper plays Krebs, a respected police Lieutenant who loves the law and always follows the rules. At least that's what everyone thinks. Asia Argento plays Gina, an exotic dancer who finds herself in trouble one night, but is grateful when Krebs comes along and saves her.
The problem is that after he saves her life, Krebs decides to save Gina from herself, too. He has a special brand of "discipline" designed to teach wayward girls how to live the good life.
And thus we see the next year of Gina's life, as she's held captive, caged in Krebs' basement. And we watch as Krebs tries to instill proper values into her, by putting her on a "points" system whereby privileges must be earned, or can be snatched away, depending on her behavior.
Like I said, I didn't really love the premise, but I thought the movie might at least be entertaining in an exciting thriller kind of way. But it wasn't. It was just dull. The dialogue was so bad, it was actually painful at times. Even as Krebs opens up to Gina, and we come to learn what makes him tick, it was far more "ho-hum" than "A-ha!!!".
And the characters are really annoying. There are a few times that Gina actually makes an attempt to get away, but she handles situations so poorly that you almost stop feeling sorry for her.
There was also another character, Ruthie, who was infatuated with Krebs. I can understand why a woman pining for a man who shows her no interest whosoever might make a few less-than-wise decisions where he's concerned. But in her case, she was just downright stupid.
Was there anything good about this movie? Ummm... Not really. Oh - wait - there was a cute kitty cat that occasionally looked into the basement window. Too bad he was useless, when it came to helping Gina escape.
The acting was atrocious, with Hopper and Argento sleep-walking through their parts. Between the stupidity of the characters, and the disaster of a script, this movie should be skipped. There is absolutely nothing worth keeping in The Keeper.
