Intro

Closing out a series that really took some big strides towards good near the end.

The Story

In the final four episodes of this series, Bocca and the rest of his team are headed into outer space to stop the monsters from completing their plan of disabling the Mitranome. After a brief recap of what the plan actually is on both ends, the attacks begin with missiles being launched on Bocca and his friends which is unfortunate since their ship is unarmed and can’t return fire.

Luckily though they are armed with Bio Concerto Gel which when applied to the pilots entire naked body, it allows the warriors of Melos to fight in space on their Aibar machines for 37 minutes. Coco is the most anxious to get this gel spread on everyone’s body by the way which makes for some hilarious moments.

When the missiles fail to do enough damage though, a monster robot is sent out to fight. Bocca is left alone when Coco withdraws from battle to use the bathroom which you’d think would be on your list of things to do before heading into a major battle but I digress. Coco heads back into battle after seeing Tone sitting by herself in the hanger, afraid to join the battle but finally she manages to join just in time.

In the second episode, the group finally reaches the station and docks. Upon getting onto the Mitranome, they make their way towards the central control room. On their way though they find a room that was damaged and run into another unicorn series Aibar machine who was asleep in the central core. Since waking up though he has been fighting with the guard robots and trying to enter the central core so that he could take control of the Mitronome for himself.

The warriors finally reach the central core only to find the monsters have made it there first. While Tone and the monster agent fight, Bocca takes on the leader of the monster union, Coco goes after the mysterious Unicorn series aibar machine who is working on his own while yet another team member attempts to access the central core.

In the third episode, things have gone from good to bad in an eyelash. Nick has managed to get the Mitronome online but before it can become fully operational, the wild Unicorn aibar machine has taken control of the Mitronome’s battleship which contains most of the weapons and has begun attacking the Mitronome. The Warriors get more bio concerto put on their bodies and head out into space to attack the ship in an effort to buy time. If they can destroy the ship before it destroyed the Mitronome than they’ll win.

Even worse is that the leader of the Monster Union has found a device that will allow him to use his noise cannon in space and disable the Aibar Machines leaving the Warriors helpless.

Even worse is when it is revealed that while the three of them were in space, the rest of the Warriors Of Melos on Earth have been destroyed and the ship they went to space on cannot return to Earth. Now in space, they are hopelessly outmatched and terribly outgunned with no hope of winning or even returning to the Earth. But with one final stand, they manage to survive long enough to get the Mitronome online and activated but only Bocca can make it back to Earth on his Aibar Machine since everyone else’s isn’t operational.

In the final episode of the series, Bocca has returned to Earth and landed in the desert. He is rescued by Solo and shown the world as it is now. He is the last Melos warrior, he has no friends left, girls are farmed to be sacrificed to the monsters and the Melody Of Oblivion is just an illusion made up by the Monster Union.

Bocca refuses to let this go though when he realizes that Solo is the real king of the monsters and so he dives in to start the final battle and save the Melody Of Oblivion and the world.

The Good And The Bad

I had very high hopes for this volume but then I put it in and one of the first things I see are the Warriors of Melos applying Bio Concerto Gel to their bodies? You’ve got to be kidding me. The writing unfortunately doesn’t get any better from here.

I’m going to avoid as many spoilers as I can but one or two might slip out at some point. The ending is nothing but a big mess. While the revelation that Solo is the real monster king was certainly a great plot twist to throw in there, the truth behind the Melody of Oblivion and then Sayoko just a few moments later was absolutely confusing to me.

There they are, riding through the sky shooting arrows at each other and next thing you know… oh I wish that I could talk about that scene but I am being good. I’d like to just leave it at this series has taken ‘realms of possibility’ quite literally and then turned that concept inside out.

I’m also having a very hard time trying to figure out where all the sexual innuendo really fit in during this volume. The Bio Concerto Gel I’m willing to let slide since they did need it to fight into space and Coco is just a very touchy feely kind of a girl who would love to apply that on everyone but the scene with Tone and Skyblue trying to get it work for them was just absolutely crossing the line for what needed to be in this series.

Music

Having the leader of the Monster Union singing the ending theme in phonetic Japanese was an interesting choice for the dub track… it’s a shame too because I actually liked that song before they killed it. And when I say they, I mean the Monster Union not the producers of the series.

Dub vs. Sub

As usual I spent an equal amount of time between the dub and sub track and found both of them equally average. To be fair, I think that it had more to do with the writing this time rather than the performances. I still thought that Jennifer Sekiguchi was fabulous as Coco and Wendy Tomson was also fabulous as Tone.

Extras

A production gallery and an article about the karaoke box that the Warriors of Melos found themselves locked in during the third episode.

Overall

I had incredibly high hopes for this series after the last couple of volumes but this ending left me all sorts of confused and dissatisfied. I feel like the entire series has been a waste of time for me and I’m telling you now don’t bother to start watching because the ending is just a big let down.

It had such great potential at the beginning and just when I started to think that it was realizing that, it all came to a crash and burn.

Final Grade: 77% - C
