I watched The Devil Wears Prada with my wife. When it first came out, I wanted nothing to do with it, thinking it was some actual satanic type thing, not some "evil boss" thing. I couldn't understand why everyone was talking about it.
Anyhow, my wife knew what it was really about, had wanted to see it some time, got the DVD from the library and watched to watch it. I had nowhere else to be, so I thought I'd at least start watching it.
Let me tell you, I was pretty entertained. It's a talking movie, but there was plenty of funny lines. My wife was sitting alongside me laughing even harder, every so often exclaiming "I knew people like that!"
She had worked for years at a major movie studio and said that she dealt with people like that all the time... people with an amazing sense of entitlement and a complete and oblivious lack of comprehension of the world beyond themselves. She admitted some had risen due to an uncanny ability to make all the right moves and choices, but that many weren't all they thought they were and it was amazing how the industry allowed them behave like that.
If there was anywhere the writing fell flat, it was in the portrayal of her friends. They had no comprehension of "paying your dues" and didn't cut Anne Hathaway's character the slack they should have.
One of the things the movie makes you think about after the fact is what you would do in a situation like that -- being on call constantly and being unable to fully own a non-work life. We thought that we'd be able to address that situation far better than the way her friends were written in that situation.
Streep and Tucci were also really great characters and for guys who are undecided or dreading having to sit through a DVD viewing, there are also a lot of attractive women in this movie.
