Call me crazy, if you will, but there is something truly luring, hypnotic even, about b-movies that really take themselves seriously. Like the seductive, siren call of the triple-headed creature that beckoned the journeymen in the Iliad, I find myself responding with ardent enthusiasm each time a no-named directed, along with an equally unknown crew of actors, decide to dish out their basement projects for mass distribution. Much like my fellow, mythological, adventurers, I suspect that things may not be as beatific as they appear but, I say to myself, it cant be that bad can it? Why not give it a chance, move in closer, see what all that hype and caterwauling is about
It is no surprise that, after having scooted in for a closer view, I find myself brutally crashing, metaphorically speaking, my little craft of self-delusion against the dull, yet jagged, edges of the films cold, lifeless, useless mass.
The film, a low budget production, staring low budget star, Elias Koteas (Exotica, Cyborg 2), and directed by low budget filmmaker, James Isaac (Jason X), is excruciatingly painful, to say the least. Mainly because of the asinine plot, which evolves around a 12-year-old boy name, Timothy. You see Timothy isnt just your average preteen boy (who is nowadays?); oh no, Timothy is a descendant from a long line of werewolves but get this, not the bad kind; rather, his were-family is good.
Apparently, unbeknownst to his mother, Timothy is a half-breed and, either because of such, or in spite of such (we never really know), contains within himself the cure for lycanthropy. Because of his power, his family has been protecting him from the forces of evil (dont you just hate those evil doers) that see their lycanthropy as a gift. These baddies revel in the bloodlust, relish the destruction and havoc the change allots them and they dont want any cure, thank you very much. Naturally, instead of simply declining the offer of a cure, the evil lycans decide they must kill the little boy, and kill him soon for they know (how is never addressed) that when Timothy turns 13-yrs, he will come into his full power and their evil ways will be put to an end.
Truly, what can I say about a film that boasts top-notch, quality dialogue such as, I am not human Im better than that, as well as has the brass ones to steal the lore of a culture and completely butcher it? I mean the writers didnt even make so much as a halfhearted attempted to be accurate or consistent in any way, and it shows throughout the film.
In Native American, as well as Norse, lore, Skinwalkers are not lycanthropes. They are shamans, or a person with a supernatural gift that enables them to take on the form of the animal whose pelts/skin they don. They do not just stand there and will themselves to shift, hence the skin in the term, Skin-walker. The closest term would be shape shifter, but either way, they are certainly not were-creatures. They are, genetically speaking, 100% human, are not influenced to change under the moon, and basically, do not resemble anything you will see in this film. Mind you, I wouldnt expect any b-movie flick to really care about historical accuracy, but it irritated me nonetheless, if not only on the grounds of false advertisement.
The movie lists itself as a horror, action thriller, well, if theyd ever care to re-categorize themselves as a comedy, Id be more than happy to up my critics rating. As it stands, the only element of the film that earned it a grade above an F were the multiple, wholly silly and comic, scenes in which Isaacs has his, ridiculously attired, cast astride a pack of hogs. I dont know why, but this sent me into a fit of uncontrollably giggles the likes I havent experiences since Lorenzo Lamas believed he could portray a badass bounty hunter with conviction. For this reason, and this reason alone, the movie redeems itself and narrowly manages not to be labeled the worst movie on earth.
Bottom line, dont be a willing victim like I was, skip this film entirely, trust me, youll thank me for the warning.
