Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I had a decision to make - whether to write an essay on the derogatory term Chix Flix ( CF) (which I absolutely detest), or review the film, Nights in Rodanthe. Perhaps I've accomplished both by writing the shortest essay on record, without compromising the review.
Nights in Rodanthe is a love story between a soon-to-be divorced woman, Adrienne Willis, and Paul Flanner, a physician/surgeon, who's also running from a bad marriage, a marred practice and perhaps, himself.
Both Adrienne and Paul are at the home of Adrienne's friend, Jean, who uses her charming, beach front monstrosity as an informal hostel. Adrienne agreed to stand-in for her friend who is out-of-town on business. Fortuitously, Adrienne takes advantage of the solitude and setting to sort out her own marital woes. Paul has come to Rodanthe to visit Robert Torrelson, the husband of a patient who died on Dr. Flanner's operating table. Flanner is traveling to Ecquador to mend his waning relationship with his son. Over the weekend a hurricane develops. Adrienne and Paul are thrown together, literally and romantically. Isn't that we all do during a hurricane?
In the meanwhile, Adrienne's ten-year old son has been taken to the hospital with an asthma attack. With the storm approaching Adrienne has no way of going to him, and blames herself totally. Paul's visit with the grieving widower falls apart, mainly because the Doctor just can't bring himself to say two little words - " I'm sorry".
Richard Gere plays Dr. Paul Flanner. On the surface he's an arrogant, no-nonsense, Dr. Dreamy. Underneath he's a hurting, frustrated man, who has his own relational fences to mend.
Diane Lane plays the part of Adrienne Willis, trying to understand herself, her purpose and her value. Her philandering husband, Jack has just informed her he wants to come back home. What's the problem, Adrienne?
Scott Glenn plays Robert Torrelson, the grieving husband. He's just filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Dr. Flanner on behalf of his wife. But, does he want money or just compassion and understanding from the last person to see his wife alive?
