| daydrmgirl's Full Review: o.b. Silk Ease Non-Applicator Tampon, Regular Abso... |
Don't you hate that sticky, warm, icky feeling when using pads? I used to hate having my period and for those reasons. I hated being a woman during my period. I tried all kinds of pads of all different brands and even those imported from different countries. Nothing worked for me until I tried tampons! No more worrying about leaks or odors! I'd go so far as to say that tampons changed my life!
My first time using tampons...
The first tampon I tried was O.B.'s regular (not silk-ease) tampon. I read the instructions and took me a while to figure out the right pose and how to apply it. The first time was intimidating, but with time and experience, it becomes natural.
Why O.B. tampons?
After I got hooked on tampons, I started experimenting with different brands and different types, e.g. Tampax, Kotex, etc., but none of them came close to O.B. for the following reasons:
* The shape and size of the tampon
O.B. tampons are shaped like a bullet with a rounded / slighted pointed end for easy application and a flat end with string attached for easy removal. Without the applicator, tampons fit easily into palms of hand and pockets without catching any attention. A box for 40 O.B. silk ease regular tampons can fit only 12 of the regular applicator tampons. The shape of the tampons makes application an easy task (please read the instructions carefully the first time).
* The design of the tampon
O.B. tampons were supposedly designed by female gynecologists. The surface of the tampons is ribbed to facilitate even swelling of the tampon as it absorbs. This feature is not seen in any of the other brands, but this actually makes a big difference in comfort and leakage prevention. When using an O.B. tampon, I rarely run into situations where the tampon is not soaked but it leaked already, as it happened to me many times when using other brands.
* Comfort level
When placed correctly, I don't feel a thing. Since your finger is more agile than an applicator, it is easier to adjust the positioning of the tampon. Also as I've mentioned, the ribs on the tampon allow even absorption so that I usually don't have to worry about leakage (mental comfort).
* Less trash!
With its compact size, it's killing much fewer trees. It also eliminates the use of plastic (for pads) and without applicators, even fewer trees (or less plastic). I usually just wrap mine in some toilet paper and dispose it in the designated box.
The O.B. Silk Ease tampon
O.B. has come up with another wonderful design! The Silk Ease tampons have a silky surface (still ribbed) of a material similar to those used in pads and diapers to keep the surface dry. In this case, it makes application and removal much easier and more comfortable. Bravo to O.B.! I especially like these on my light days, since when using the traditional non-silk ease ones, with less flow on light days, the application and removal can be somewhat harder due to friction (because it is dryer).
The downside
Without the applicator, you're using your fingers (index or middle, I personally use my index finger). Definitely wash your hand beforehand. Your finger might get dirty on heavier days so make sure you wipe it clean (and wash your hand later) before you touch anything else.
From an O.B. Fan
I only buy O.B. tampons now. Whenever it's on sale, I just buy five or six boxes of them which will probably last me for over half-an-year. I usually use one box of 20 (a combination of regular and super) for each period. Here's an example of how I use my O.B. tampons:
Day 1 and day 2 (heavy flow):
Super absorbency, change every 3 to 4 hours (I would get heavier ones and just change less often as well, but I kind of like to change it whenever I go to the bathroom anyways).
Day 3 (lighter flow):
Super absorbency, change every 6 hours.
Day 4-6 (light flow):
Regular absorbency, change every 6 to 8 hours.
To use or not to use?
I'd say give tampon a chance if you're really sick and tired of pads. The thought of something in your body may be awkward, but give it a try and it's really not as awkward as it may sound. I recommend O.B. Silk Ease for beginner and experienced users alike.
