Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:Well-written, believable characters, good story line.
Cons:Not long enough.
The Bottom Line: Good quality, easy to read science fiction is hard to come by. Even harder to come by is science fiction written by African American women. Need I say more?
I am somewhat biased when it comes to Octavia Butler and her writing. She is one of my all time favourite authors and this book is a little gem in my opinion.

In "Parable of Sower" we meet Lauren Olamina, a young girl with empathetic abilities. This "talent" she has is hidden all except her family. The world Lauren is living in is a world on the brink of destruction and Lauren knows she and her family are living on borrowed time and that her Minister father's dream of everything going back to the way it once was is futile and hopeless. With the death of her family and most of friends in a frenzied attack by drug addicts Lauren leaves the only home she has ever known. With two other survivors of the massacre she sets off on a quest that will take them halfway across America, gathering other stragglers along the way, such as two prostitutes on the run from their pimp father, a middle aged Academic who becomes Lauren's lover, an orphaned child and an assortment of other disparate and displaced people who find in Lauren the last vestige of hope for themselves and what is left of their families. For Lauren carries within her a strange new belief. She calls it Earthseed, a creed she is sure will one-day lead to the stars and a life beyond a corrupted and dying earth. "Parable of the Sower," is a haunting novel of a world in transition, where only the strong, the cruel and the vicious will survive. Those who cannot defend themselves will be either killed or enslaved, the world is going back on itself and slavery is rearing its ugly head once again. All the characters in this book are wonderfully portrayed, and each one touches a place in your heart with their hopes and fears for an uncertain future.
This novel is ultimately about people's strengths and weaknesses, and how sometimes you have to believe in something different in order to survive in a changing world.
Octavia Butler does it again is all I can say to end this review.
