Durable Solar Calculator from Texas Instruments -- It Works!
Written: Jul 6, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:solar and battery power, angled display, large keys, memory, nice shape, good weight
Cons:won’t fit in a shirt pocket
The Bottom Line: This Texas Instruments solar calculator with battery backup is a sturdy, durable machine.
Our office has several small calculators. This Texas Instruments Calculator (Model # TI-1795SV) is a popular one. I like it for a variety of reasons.
Description
Texas Instruments advertises this as a mini-desktop calculator that is solar with battery backup. It has a pleasing curved design and measures about 4” wide x 7” deep and stands 1/2" tall. The LCD display offers large numbers in an 8-digit display, and the display is angled for easy viewing. Features include large function keys, memory, a plus/minus change sign, square root key, and tax rate keys. It is a basic calculator.
Our Experiences
The thing that immediately grabbed my attention regarding this Texas Instruments calculator is the shape. I’m so used to seeing square and rectangular calculators. This machine has a nice curved design. It is weighty enough to sit well on a flat surface, yet it is light enough to easily hold and use. This is not meant as a calculator to carry in a shirt pocket, though. It won’t fit.
This calculator offers basic functions. Several of us use this solar calculator, and we all like it. The buttons are large and easy to press. They are not rubberized, but the buttons are contoured. The display is also simple to read with its larger numbers. This calculator is designed as a solar calculator, but it also has built-in battery backup up in case there is a lighting issue.
The calculator is many years old, and while the display area still looks great, the solar panel area has scratched a bit. Overall, the calculator is in excellent condition.
The most functions done on this calculator are addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing. I also like the memory feature since I often need to store figures to later use again. Rarely is the square root key used.
We never use the Tax keys. However, the instructions are simple. To set the tax rate, enter a number (example the number 6) for the tax rate and press RATE. Then press the TAX-plus key. To recall the Tax Rate, press the RATE key and the TAX-minus key. Texas Instruments provides the following example: $12.00 plus 6-percent equals $12.72. Enter 12.00 and press the TAX-plus key to get the result. If you want to subtract ($12.72 minus 6-percent equals $12.00), enter 12.72 and then press the TAX-minus key.
Purchasing
Amazon.com sells this calculator for $11.48. Staples.com offers it for $11.99.
Summary
I would definitely purchase more of these Texas Instruments Calculators. It’s a terrific little machine that is durable and easy to use.
I hope you found this review useful.
