AEI80DW-O Entry #11: Go Solar. Be Green.

  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Ease of Use:
Pros:Durable, Sleek Design, Easy to Use, Efficient Solar Panel Battery.
Cons:Small Display.
The Bottom Line: The TI-36X Solar is an inexpensive, easy to use, and cosmetically stunning scientific calculator fit to replace your basic four-function calculator.

I’ve used Texas Instruments for all my calculating needs for most of my life. I learned gradually through using multiple TI calculators (TI-83/TI-84/TI-89 Titanium) that it is a respectable brand. About three years ago, when I needed to replace a basic four-function calculator to use every day around my home office, I decided to try the Texas Instruments 36X Solar. As a scientific calculator, I knew it would be functional for both basic operations and slightly complicated calculations if the need arose.

The TI-36X Solar was very convenient to find. I merely went to my neighborhood Staples store and picked it up for $20. I have also seen this calculator in other office supplies stores such as Office Depot.

Background

The first model of the TI-36X Solar was based on the 1985 version of the TI-35 PLUS, with the only difference being the added solar panel.  The current cosmetic revision was done in 2004, when the entire structure of the TI-36X Solar was re-done – changing its look and feel. With the addition of color keys and a cleaner display, the TI-36X Solar looks flashy, feels light, and is extremely versatile when it comes to performing operations and calculations.

For students looking to pick up a high-end scientific calculator, the TI-36X Solar is an inexpensive solution. It is allowed on most major standardized tests, unlike some of the graphing calculators that are banned because of the ability to store data. A ridiculous, but true example of this feature is being able to load an entire dictionary onto the TI-89. Imagine if it were allowed on the SAT’s!

Functions, Cosmetics, and Ease of Use

The TI-36X Solar performs the basic operations in addition to trigonometric functions, logarithms, reciprocals, factorials, one/two variable statistics including linear regression and trend line analysis, and other basic scientific functions. TI suggests using this calculator for general math up to Calculus and can be functional for the sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, and even engineering.

For the most part, I find myself using the basic functions of the TI-36X Solar. There are only a few instances when I have use for the more scientific functions. However, it is useful and convenient to have the TI-36X Solar around when I need a quick calculation that is more complex. Try finding the compounded interest on your mortgage or loan of some kind and you would understand.

The numbers 0-9 keys are black, with white text. They are very clear and easy to use. The basic operations are to the right, with the on/off button in the upper, right-hand corner. These keys are what you would find on a normal four-function calculator.

Beyond these keys, there are numerous other keys with advanced scientific functions. All of them are colored silver, with black text. The secondary / tertiary buttons (that allow users to select functions that are printed above the key) are blue and green.

All the keys are separated and raised. For a person with large thumbs, I have no trouble pressing the keys. They respond quickly and are light to the touch.

The display reveals 10 digits on a 1-line display. The internal memory has a 12-digit precision, so you don’t have to worry about whether your answers were rounded inaccurately. Furthermore, there is a smaller 2-digit display for exponents. I found that these exponents were barely readable on the already cramped display. Thank goodness I don’t use exponents very often. Be sure to take this into consideration if you are considering the TI-36X Solar.

Battery Life

After three years of use, the battery on my TI-36X Solar is still working properly. There are no compartments to insert disposable batteries and the solar panel is installed. I never have to “recharge” the solar battery – it’s always available when I need it. The TI-36X Solar works even in dim, low-light situations. It even conserves battery usage by turning off after a period of idleness.

Case

The case for the TI-36X Solar was advertised as a slide-on cover. However, it does not actually slide on. In fact, it snaps on. Using four hinges, the cover contorts and latches onto the TI-36X Solar.

The cover still hasn’t broken after three years, proving its durability and reliability.
