Pros:Programs, Memory, Battery Life, and Many Other Capabilities
The Bottom Line:
I would highly recommend the TI-83 for anybody needing a reliable calculator with all of the many capabilties a person would need.
I bought the TI-83 back in high school when I was taking a few math classes. The teacher recommended this calculator and at first I wasn’t exactly thrilled about the price. At that point in time, I could have definitely found better things to spend $100 on. As my class continued to get more in depth, I became more appreciative of the many capabilities and it became worth the price. Programs/Programmable: One of the best things that I have found is the calculator’s ability to create programs and then transfer them from one calculator to another. It was in my high school math class that my teacher gave all of the students, with this particular calculator, a quadratic formula already programmed. It was a simple way to check our work without having to complete the problem by hand again. I couldn’t believe how much time it saved. Of course I enjoyed sharing all kinds of programs with other students in the class. Linking to other TI83 to share data was such a benefit. This calculator has a large memory that can hold multiple games and programs. I had a few games on my calculator that I would use when I would get bored. This perk probably isn’t the most educational benefit of this calculator, but was certainly appreciated by students. Other Capabilities: As I took more advanced math classes through high school and even into my college years, I found many other uses of this calculator. First of all, the screen is large enough to plot points on a graph. It’s very easy to enter in an equation and watch it graph the line. Once the line is graphed, you have many options like zooming in or finding a maximum value. There are other complete data analyses that you can perform which are efficient and time saving. TI-83 Size: The TI-83 calculator is much larger than a normal calculator that you use daily. The dimensions are four inches wide and seven inches long. It is almost one inch thick but this calculator has the size to carry that much more information. The screen size makes it easy to view graphs in detail and it holds several lines of data at a time. It is easy to spot a mistake in an equation and it is even easier to use to arrow keys to scroll to the mistake. I thought it was such a benefit to be able to see what numbers are being punched in and to fix it without having to retype the whole equation again. Calculator Features: I have the black color of this calculator but my siblings have bought this same type of Texas Instrument calculator in the silver edition. It comes with a large case that slides over the whole calculator so the screen and keyboard are covered. I have had my TI-83 for a few years now and it is still in perfection condition. I have used this daily and the battery life has lasted a long time. Over the four years I have owned this calculator I have only had to change the batteries twice. Each time, it gives a warning screen when the batteries need to be changed and it continues to work for a long time after the warning screen appears. It uses AAA batteries and it has a back up battery to save stored data when you are making the switch.
In conclusion, I have found the TI-83 calculator to be well worth the $100 I bought it for. I have used it for several years with no problems. The programs, memory, battery life, and many other capabilities of the Texas Instrument TI-83 make it a great calculator that I will continue to use for a long time.
