| rootk's Full Review: Texas Instruments TI-92 Plus Graphic Calculator |
Introduction
I love this calculator. It got me through my last 3 years of college. One day, one of my good friends walked in with one and was showing it off, and I was like, “dude, I have to get one of those.” The most notable thing about this calculator is it’s tiny qwerty keyboard. You will no doubt get all kinds of questions and comments from people who have never seen a calculator of this type/size/style. It is such a geeky conversation starter. lol
Features
The most awesome thing about this calculator to me is the 'pretty print' which displays equations exactly like you'd see in a text book. You type them in using the appropriate parentheses and such, and presto chango, your formulas will appear in a way that you can actually understand.
A couple years ago, TI came out with the PLUS addition which allows the calculator to do simple ordinary Differential Equations. I wish I would have had the update when I took that class. It came out about 2 years too late, but still proved useful when it came time to take the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
There are so many functions that this calculator can perform. Some of the more useful are all the trig and basic calculus functions as I have already alluded to. Some to the algebraic functions are good too. You can easily solve a complex equation for a single variable. I can’t tell you how many times the solving complex equation ability of this thing saved me in Circuits and Instrumentation classes… where you’re dealing with all this imaginary numbers and freaky things like that. I have no idea what other people did or how they made it out of there with their puny $20 Wal-mart special calculators.
For the student who has to do a lot with raw data, the Data/Matrix editor is a possible solution. It proved very useful when doing labs where we had to write down data and perform a statistical analysis on the data. Need the standard deviation and mean and the four quartiles? No problem it spits them out in a matter of seconds.
Another semi-useful feature is the ability to hook up two of these bad boys together and share info and data. You can transmit your lab data, test answers, notes, games, and whatever else by simply connecting the two units with a supplied data transfer cable.
Overall the way the menu structure is laid out on screen (the big screen…) is very logical and one doesn’t even have to read the manual to get started using the functions. Some of the probability and statistics and advanced math options of course, require some in depth studying, but overall this is one very easy calculator to use.
Things I haven’t used
There are a host of graphing functions as well, but I never have delved into that area, because I haven’t had too, and who has the time to do that these days? Never did do much with the programming aspect other than download games to play during class.
I have searched on the net for programs and the like, mostly engineering related… numerical methods, heat and mass transfer analysis, simple equation of motion programs etc. There are a lot of good sites online. Just do a general search on Ti-92 programs and you’ll be amazed at what you will find.
Conclusions
If you want a calculator that can do all the math from high school to college... then this is the one. Most engineers like the HP 48 GX and it's variants, but I hate the reverse polish notation. I tried it. Couldn't get use to it.
So in the end, I highly recommend this calculator to anyone in college who is studying
