BILL'S TI-92 REVIEW
If you are allowed to use it, the TI-92 is one of the most awesome calculators on the planet. It has the most features, and it is very expandable. Here's the scoop on the calculator.
WHAT'S GOOD
1. Exact or Approximate: Hate doing fractions and getting a decimal answer? On the TI-92 you can choose between exact or approximate settings. Exact gives you precise fraction answers, and approximate gives decimal approximations.
2. Display: The screen has excellent resolution, perfect for complex plots.
3. Plotting: The calculator can do 2d and 3d plotting with ease. The plots are excellent, and can be changed with ease so you can see what you want to see.
4. Interface: The TI-92 has an excellent GUI, which I believe is named Fargo. The calculator has a menu bar on top of the screen, which allows you to easily select stuff and move between screens.
5. Split-screen: This is so cool! You can have two separate things displayed on the screen at once. The screen is split in the middle, and you can, for instance, show a graph on the left and a Y= or notepad on the left. This is totally cool!
6. Features: There are so many features I don't know where to begin!
7. Lab Compatibility: You can purchase a "lab instrument" kit for the TI-92, which allows lab instruments like digital thermometers, PH meters, and motion detectors to be plugged into the TI-92. This is excellent for data analysis.
8. Connectivity: The TI-92 can communicate with other TI-92s, and it can also be hooked up to a computer, from which pages can be printed and programs downloaded.
WHAT'S BAD
1. Display: Despite the display’s size and resolution, it isn't all that good. It is hard to get the contrast right, so sometimes you need to look carefully to see the screen. A backlight would have been very nice, since you need good lighting to see the display.
2. Size: This is the main problem with the unit; it is gargantuan. You cannot put it into a even a large pocket. I usually keep in in one of the compartments on my book bag.
Overall, if you don't mind the steep price tag and a few problems, the TI-92 is the calculator for you. However, the good features easily outweigh the unit's problems.
