The Dymo series of mechanical labelling systems are a throwback to an age of the viewmaster, and atari 2600; it is a dinosaur. Granted, the Dymo (and the viewmaster) looks cool in this age of retro . It has a 1970's modern esthetic of cheap plastic with its straight lines, non-ergonomic curves; bold industrial blue and white colors; and plain utilitarian feeling to it all.
The Dymo works by mechanical action. It actually does not "print" labels, but embosses them. To create a word, you must spell it out, dialing each letter type, and squeezing on the grip to emboss the type onto the plastic. It's very simple, time consuming, and labor intensive as your hand may cramp after squeezing out one too many letters. Additionally, there is no correction key on this thing, one mistake, and you must start over with a new strip. Don't try it with words like supercalifragilisticexpaliadocious, honorificabilitudintatibus, or hepaticocholangiocholecystenterostomies.
The labelmaker houses a roll of plastic tape inside its body. The tape sizes which can be used are 1/4", and 3/8" tapes of any color. After a strip is made, it can be cut off with a push of a lever on top of the labelmaker. The Dymo includes all letters of the alphabet, numbers, and some special characters on its built-in type dial. All letters are in uppercase, and those who need lowercase alphanumerics will be disappointed.
Among the labelmaker's deficiencies is that if not enough pressure is applied to emboss a letter, then the device may jam a little. One must click on the device with the right amount of pressure.
The Dymo might be good for a few labels, and laughs before it breaks down. Either that, or your hand will cramp from squeezing out one too many letters. Pick this one up if you plan on time traveling, otherwise get serious and versatile, and buy an electronic label maker.
