I wanted a basic fax machine for my home. There are times that I need to fax, and I’ve been driving to town and paying $1 per page to send faxes. I just write the “to” and “from” on the sheet I’m sending, because it’s nuts to pay $1 to send a whole page with nothing but names listed. It’s not like I have a company with a fancy letterhead sheet. Even with my own fax machine now, I don’t send pages just to write Dear and Sincerely though I suppose I could. It doesn’t take much longer to send two pages rather than one.

I didn’t really need all the features on the Brother 770 and don’t use all the options. This is my FAX MACHINE. I have a phone and when I scan I email or run a copy and fax from the scanned page. This machine could be my phone and also can be hooked up with a cable (not included) to PC fax and scan. I suppose if I had incoming faxes, then I would use more functions. I can take incoming faxes, but people have to call me and tell me to turn on the fax machine to do that. I prefer to do it that way, and that’s the way I do it.

Basically, I have this on my kitchen counter and when I want to fax I plug in the fax line to the phone and send my fax. I press HOOK on the top which then opens up the line. Then I press in the phone number, and the machine dials. I can hear this without picking up the receiver piece. When it picks up and the buzz starts, then I press START and the fax sends. When my fax is done, then I unplug the line and put the phone back the way I know and like it.

The first time I used the fax, it pulled the sheets through doubled up. Though it is supposed to be able to take a stack of papers and plain paper with no problems, it did not do well with several sheets. I just feed them one at a time now. That could be a problem if you send a lot of faxes or it you have a fax with many sheets. With hand feeding, it works great. I’ve never had a problem with standing there and putting the sheets in.

The 770 will make copies, but the ink is expensive for copies. I think the ink cartridge that comes with the machine is a mini model with very little ink. It runs out fast, and then the replacements are expensive. I would not suggest using this as a copy machine though you can make copies in a pinch.

There are a lot of features on this machine, and they are listed through Epinions by clicking on the manufacturer’s web site. That click also includes a rebate for the machine. I would suggest checking out what is offered on the machine if you’re interested in using the machine as more than just a fax or if you want to do fancy stuff like program in the numbers where you fax a lot. It would likely meet most needs. Personally, I don’t like so many different options on one machine. I would rather use the phone for calls and the fax for faxes. I keep it all straight better that way.

I’ve purchased from Brother before, and my thoughts are that they have good products but not very sturdy. I would be more concerned about this purchase if I planned to use the machine a lot and for lots of different tasks. As an easy fax only machine, it has worked out really well.

The price listed is high. I got mine for about $70 with a rebate. That made it a good buy to send out things I need to fax. It didn’t take long to make up the difference with those $1 per page faxes I’d been sending.

If you can get a good price and just need a fax machine for occasional items, then I can give thumbs up. If you’re paying the list price at $250 or do a lot of faxing, then I’d suggest spending some time looking around.
