| grusu's Full Review: Brother MFC 9100C InkJet Printer |
After the hair-tearing experience with the almost-impulse-buy Sharp AJ-5030 MFC, (see my review for it), which I took back over the Thanksgiving long weekend, this MFC was absolutely fantastic!!!!
Out-of-box:
I managed to pick up the 9100c as a refurbished unit from my local electronics depot, (interestingly enough, AJ-5030's were all over the place on the shelves). If there weren't labels on the box and the manual saying it was a refurbished unit, you'd think it was new.
Install/Setup:
I followed the instructions on the placemat and got the printer installed in about 30 minutes. The gotcha I ran into was that the Windows 2000 application/driver included on the CD didn't work. Looking closer, seems that Windows 2000 isn't actually mentioned in the list of Operating Systems in the manual or the packing box, rather NT 4.0. However, Brother's web site included the Windows 2000 software and How-To instructions. Although I can FAX from Windows 2000 from the Brother application, I'm not sure if the standard FAX support in Windows 2000's works.
Sharing:
With this type of unit, (fax, printer, scanner, etc.), you would likely want to share as many of its features in your home office of business as possible, (I do!!!). Unlike my nightmare with the AJ5030, this unit was an absolute breeze to install, and in exactly the same software/networking environment I was trying to get the AJ-5030 working under. It just works!!!
Performance:
Although I haven't done specific tests or anything, this unit is definitely closer to its performance promises. Easily 1.5 to 2 times faster in printing and scanning than the AJ5030. Consumables are expensive though - like $17 for a black cartridge and $8 for each color cartridge. Oh yes, this MFC uses independent color cartridges - the idea is that you replace only the color you need and not the ones you don't. Since I just got it, I can't tell yet how much ink this puppy drinks.
