Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:nice watercolor illustrations, theme of friendship
Cons:the idea of rowing to the south pole is dangerous but not addressed that way
The Bottom Line: This is a good book for children about a true friendship between an unlikely duo.
I am not sure why we brought home this book from the library recently, but I am glad we did, it is a very warming story about a little boy and a penguin.

Lost and Found is the tale of a boy who finds a penguin who figures must be lost as he seems sort of sad. He tries to find the owner of the penguin but gets nowhere in his attempts so he decides to take the penguin back to his normal home at the south pole and begins rowing.
The trip takes many days and along the way the boy shares many stories with the penguin. The penguin doesn't talk back but the boy likes having a listener. After the arrive the boy is thrilled to have made it by the penguin seems sad as it steps out of the boat. As the boy begins rowing back and thinks about the days ahead on the trip back home with no one to share his stories with he begins to feel a bit sad himself. You'll need to read the story to see how it ends, but I definitely liked it.
The book is by Oliver Jeffers and is a lovely story of friendship. There are many ways to be a friend and just being interested and responsive to someone is a good place to start. There is just a sentence or two on each page, but with the expressive watercolor illustrations this book has character.
The little boy has a large head and stick thing legs. The penguin is quite oval shaped, but it is easy to tell he is a penguin from his colorings. Obviously setting out in a rowboat to the south pole isn't a very good idea, but the extreme situation isn't really the matter of this tale, the relationship that forms between these seemingly quite different creatures is a strong and meaningful one and it was expressed well.
I definitely recommend this book to children ages 3-7. It will make you smile as you finish reading it to your child and hopefully your child will be smiling too. My almost six year old asked to read this book several times before we had to return it to the library.
