If you are looking for a simple protective pouch for your Magellan GPS unit, then Magellan’s canvas carrying case might be worth considering.
Able to fit both SporTrac and the 300 series GPS units, the canvas carrying case protects your GPS unit with interior padding. The case itself measures slightly more than the SporTrac or 300 series units but only weighs a few ounces, adding little weight to anyone carrying a GPS unit. For those of you without the SporTrac or 300 series or with another brand of GPS unit, it’s worth seeing if your unit will fit because the case has enough play in it to fit different sized units other than just the SporTrac and 300 series.
The case is made of a durable canvas material and is padded to help prevent damage to the GPS unit. The padding will protect the unit from bumps and bangs in a backpack and is also strong enough to protect it from small drops. The padding is not enough to protect your unit from a large fall – so don’t be dangling it off any cliffs. The top of the case is zippered to prevent your unit from falling out and seals the case from the elements outside. There is a small compartment inside the larger, main compartment where the unit fits. This smaller compartment can be used to store extra batteries and is a handy addition to the carrying case. If you want to wear the case on your belt instead of packing it into your backpack, there is a belt loop on the back of the case that makes it easy to wear.
The canvas is not waterproof and the carrying case will not protect your GPS unit from water damage over the long term. For short-term rainstorms or splashing, the case will work fine to protect the unit, but any type of deep soaking or submersion can compromise the case and your GPS unit inside. I would suggest placing the GPS unit inside a zip loc bag to protect it against water.
Final Thoughts
Because you are spending upwards of $150 or so dollars on a GPS unit (or even more on the newest units), the money that it costs for a protective case for the unit are well spent. Magellan’s canvas carrying case does an admirable job protecting a GPS unit (except for being waterproof) and no outdoor GPS user should be without some sort of case for their unit.
